The Poznan Practicum serves as a natural extension of the ASU Summer Sessions' nine-week intensive Polish language course in the Critical Languages Institute, held on the campus of Arizona State University, May 30 to July 28, 2006. A city of 600,000 inhabitants in north-western Poland, Poznan is an exquisite Renaissance old town and the capital of the most affluent province of the country, with flourishing agriculture and industry, and rich cultural traditions. Poznan lies half way between Berlin and Warsaw, linking the East and West. The oldest section of the city called Ostrow Tumski (build in 10th - 11th century AD), gave rise to the Polish state itself. It is there, in the Cathedral's Golden Chapel, that homage is paid to the first rulers of Poland. Poznan is also a research and university center with a strong growing trend. Currently in Poznan, 120,000 students are enrolled in 19 state and private institutions of higher education. When The three-week practicum in Poznan is held in August immediately following the annual Critical Languages Institute at ASU. Next summer's session runs from July 31 to August 18, 2006.

Portage-Cragin has been collecting Polish language materials and materials in English about Polish history and culture since 1984. The collection consists of over 4000 volumes of books, over 425 Polish language videos, over 400 circulating back issues of Polish language magazines, and current subscriptions to one Polish newspaper and three magazines. Among its distinguished chairs was Danuta Bienkowska , a well known writer and poet. After her tragic death in 1974, the professorship was held briefly by Richard Lourie , an accomplished writer and prolific translator, and then for over twenty years by Louis Iribarne , a highly esteemed translator of Witkacy, Milosz, and Gombrowicz. Until 1998, Hanka Markowicz taught Polish language. In 1998 both Profs. Iribarne and Markowicz retired and the program changed hands. It was taken over by Tamara Trojanowska , a graduate of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the University of Toronto (Ph.D.94). During her career, Prof. Trojanowska has taught at the Jagiellonian University, York University, and Wilfrid Laurier University. From 1995 to 1998 she headed the Program of Polish Langauge and Literature at the University of Chicago. At U of T, she teaches courses on Polish literature, culture, film, and theatre.
