     Extractions: Endangered and Threatened Plant and Insect Species Much of the character of Virginia has been altered by man since the early settlers of colonial times were first greeted by Virginia's continuous wilderness. Virginia is being transformed progressively into a cultural landscape which threatens the natural history of the Commonwealth. As a result of these changes, many species lead an uncertain and tenuous existence, surviving in fragments of their natural habitat, or as marginal species in a changing environment. Some 500 plants (nearly 20% of Virginia's flora) and many insect species have been identified as state species of "special concern" which because of their extreme rarity, could be lost from the state's flora and fauna if some measures of protection are not taken.      Extractions: Endangered, Threatened and Special Concern Species In 1989, the Connecticut Legislature passed Public Act 89-224 "An Act Establishing a Program for the Protection of Endangered and Threatened Species." The overall goal of the legislation is to conserve, protect, restore and enhance any endangered or threatened species and their essential habitat. As part of the Endangered/Threatened species program, the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection can conduct studies of wildlife and plants to better understand their distribution, population, habitat needs and limiting factors which determine conservation and management measures. One of the first steps in the implementation of the law requires the Commissioner to develop lists of Endangered, Threatened and Special Concern Species. Initial lists were developed by DEP biologists and then reviewed by groups of experts in their various taxonomic fields. In July of 1991, public comment was solicited, evaluated and incorporated into the listing process. This list was then finalized and published; as required by law, the list was reviewed and revised in 1997 and once again in 2004. The effective data of the newest list is June 3, 2004. The list is broken down into taxonomic groups: mammals birds reptiles amphibians ... invertebrates and plants . Within these taxonomic groups the species are further categorized as being Endangered (E), Threatened (T) or Special Concern (SC). Each list is alphabetized by the species' scientific name.      Extractions: The Endangered Species Act of 1973 charged the US Department of the Interior with listing various plant and animal species as threatened or endangered. The list of endangered or threatened species present on this report is the list of endangered or threatened species in the county. The most detailed, publicly-available information on the location of endangered or threatened species is county level. Use the educational material to determine if the land analyzed is likely to have endangered or threatened species present. For example, endangered species that live in the Missouri River will be listed on all counties bordering the Missouri River. But only those farms actually bordering the Missouri River will have any endangered fish species near their property. There are 3 types of animals listed on a report. Endangered Animals: Missouri has endangered animals designated by the Missouri Wildlife Code . Anyone found taking (collection or destruction) these designated animals faces a Class B Misdemeanor. The habitat of these animals is not specifically regulated by the state of Missouri; landowners are not required to take any steps to maintain habitat for these species on their private land. However, if a landowner is using federal money for a development project, then the federal agency managing the project must ensure that there is no negative impact on the threatened and endangered species. It is also illegal to destroy or alter habitat that results in harm to the species.
