A collaborative project of the International Association for plant taxonomy and the Smithsonian Institution, providing a compilation of generic names published for all organisms covered by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.

Extractions: The Index Nominum Genericorum ING ), a collaborative project of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) and the Smithsonian Institution, was initiated in 1954 as a compilation of generic names published for all organisms covered by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature . We are pleased to offer a way to search the ING database . We hope that those needing access to information about generic names of plants will use the index and will advise us of potential additions and corrections. Ellen Farr and Gea Zijlstra, Editors The original intent of the ING was to bring all generic names of plants together in a single list to reveal homonymy between groups. In addition, ING includes bibliographic citations and information about the typification and nomenclatural status of generic names. The index was first published on sets of printed cards and then in book form in 1979 (Farr et al., 1979). A supplement was also published (Farr et al., 1986). While a second supplement is planned, we recognize that hard copy is immediately out of date, and for users with access to the Internet we believe that the World Wide Web offers promise as a useful platform for a collaborative project such as this. Current work on the ING is supported by the Smithsonian Institution, IAPT, and the University of Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands. Extractions: The flora of a true "Jurassic Park" would contain no flowering plants. Given the ubiquitous nature and aggressive tendencies of modern angiosperms, it would be difficult to keep flowering plants out of a large parkland today. However, during the Jurassic Period (180-135 million years ago), the global ecosystem - dominated by large reptiles - was fueled by non-flowering vascular plants (mostly spore producers [ferns and related types - the Pteridophytes ] and gymnosperms). Evidence of angiosperms appears in the fossil record near the beginning of the Cretaceous Period, about 125 million years ago and this is in the form of pollen. Archaic dicots and most monocots produce a relatively simple type of pollen - monosulcate - that has only a single, elongate pore through which the microgametophye emerges. This can be distinguished from the pollen of gymnosperms and this is the type this is rarely encountered in early Cretaceous sediments. However, as indicated by expansion and differentiation of angiospermous pollen , it appears that the flowering plants came to dominate the world's flora with - from a geologic perspective - remarkable speed . Extractions: History of Plant Taxonomy Taxonomy is probably the oldest science and certainly almost from the beginning of human existence plants have been classified based on their edibility, and other uses to humans. Note three cultures all based on different member of grass family: European - wheat, Oriental - rice, American - maize (corn). The development of western plant taxonomy has at least five distinct periods: I. Preliterate - since this is pre written record, we have little direct knowledge of this period. However, through the years, all cultures have learned which of the plants around them are useful, whether for medicines, food, clothing, shelter, weapons, etc. We certainly have much archaeological evidence and even information from ancient paintings, drawings or utensils, and even common sense tells us that humans have always known something about the plants around them and their uses. Obviously they knew which were edible and which were poisonous. Also virtually all civilizations have taken advantage of the medicinal properties of plants. In most cultures the medicinal aspects of plants were closely guarded secrets and probably passed on from medicine man to medicine man. In almost all cultures, even today, medicinal information is concentrated in the hands of a few, whether it be witch doctors, medicine men, shamans or even doctors. As you will shortly see, its only in the past few hundred years that plant taxonomy has progressed past classification based on medicinal properties.

Laboratories review the characteristics of major plant families and acquaint students with local flowering plants, methods of identifying them, and their distribution. Course goals, learning objectives and design: During the lecture portion of the course you will develop an understanding of biosystematics and plant classification, and will learn how current concepts were formed. You will be able to explain the principles of classification and discuss the history of plant taxonomy. We will study biosystematics (the investigation of what species are and the relationships among them) and learn how species evolve and how species and species groups are related biologically, geographically, and ecologically. We will also cover historic and contemporary concepts of classification (and thus, you will learn the means by which scientists try to organize information for grouping and identification of plants). The laboratories are designed to help you develop the skills and familiarity with the tools used for identification and classification of flowering plants. These skills should help you recongnize many plants and plant families of northwestern Wyoming and aid you in identification of nearly any plant in North America. You will be able to identify unknown palnt species using dichotomous keys and be able to recognize major western plant families.
