The program, Parents and Children Learning Together, was held at a Team Nutrition school in Hartford. Results of these programs indicate that both parents and children have improved food and nutrition behaviors, and the teachers report seeing much less plate waste. Children reported improved behaviors, and some comments from students included, “I didn’t know I liked vegetables, but now I eat my raw broccoli”; “My mom is making bread with us, we have lots of time together;" "My mom is buying 100% juice;" "I'm drinking water every day."

Last Sunday the soccer team played a dramatic match, and everyone in the town came to watch. The Volunteers are excited to go to midterm and play at the beach! El Centeno: This week in Centeno, the Volunteers collaborated with community members to throw an amazing birthday party for their Project Supervisor, complete with dancing, a yummy cake, a piñata, and traditional Panamanian food. They have been teaching English classes in the school and spending time with new friends. Buena Vista The Volunteers have been hard at work preparing to build a community park and to host a huge health fair at the end of July. On top of that, they have continued the exercise group and English classes. They look forward to working with the children as well. They are also excited to spend time on the beach at midterm. El Bongo: T he Volunteers in El Bongo have been spending time at the primary school, working with children and teens on various workshops such as creative expression and dancing. They have established a womens soccer team that is preparing to participate in a tournament soon. They look forward to starting construction of a community park.

Extractions: A r c h i v e d I n f o r m a t i o n The Uses of Time for Teaching and Learning - October 1996 Thus far, our discussion of resources has focused not only on the straightforward issue of the costs of extending the school day and the school year but also on the much more complicated issue of garnering time for planning, implementation, and professional development. The case study data point to three additional structural resources essential to successful change efforts: (1) support in the policy arena resulting in reform activities and/or encouragement of experimental programs; (2) assignment of special staff as in-school resources; and (3) the support of teacher unions. Reform Initiatives and Experimental Programs A full examination of the contributions of various state and local reform initiatives to the time-related innovations in our sample of school is beyond the scope of this study. Nevertheless, our data do permit several observations about this relationship. Only one of the time-related innovations that attracted our attention, Timilty, was carried out to address a reform initiative or mandate, although the establishment of AMY was part of a larger school district desegregation effort. At five sites, including AMY, as well as Moton and Lockett, Hollibrook, Wheeler, and Concurrent Options, broader state and/or local initiatives either supported or legitimized reforms as changes that were already underway at the school level.

The First Day A. BREAKING THE ICE The first day can be a challenge, an opportunity, or a trial. Carefully planned, this day can lay a solid groundwork for the entire semester. Use the first class as a way of easing into the semester. Tailor your own first day exercises to reflect and potentially enrich the content of the course you will offer. Several teachers suggested having students conduct interviews with each other so that they know at least one person in the class and begin to feel at home. First day exercises also allow you to gather needed basic information about the students and will help you to begin to learn the students' names.
