Extractions: Primary Health Care through family health programmes in field practice area Hadaba Shargia, Tripoli, Libya Volume 1, Issue 1, 1995, Page 87-95 Sadik Abounaja and Chandra S. Nayak The study looked at 3 465 people from 427 families who visited the family clinic in Hadaba Shargia, Tripoli, Libya, between December 1985 and November 1987. Total coverage for the multiphasic screening was 61.93%, out of which a majority were below the age of 15 years. The literacy rate was 64.18%. Most of those screened above the age of 15 were housewives. Of the families, 75.36% were living as nuclear families, with average family size of 8.1. Morbidity prevalence at the time of survey was 464.6 per 1 000, with a predominance of infectious diseases. Vaccination coverage was high for BCG while moderate for DPT and polio and low for measles. Introduction Medical practice has been limited for centuries to the treatment of patients upon request, the emphasis being more curative than preventative. The gradual development of family and community medicine since the nineteenth century has added new dimensions of social responsibility to medicine. The pattern of disease in the community is very different from the pattern in the hospitals; therefore the illnesses of the community must be studied within their ecological setting. Most of the time the fundamental and preventable causes of illness are usually to be found within the community itself [

Extractions: "Swatting FliesEating Elephants" challenges the Extension system to become a premier adult education agency by focusing talented teachers on real world clientele. The thesis is that Extension has compromised itself by clinging to a dwindling clientele-base with an unfocused curriculum and a strategy of political reliance. What Business Are We In? Johnson, Earl C. There is a parallel between U.S. industrial firms that have been successful for 100 or more years and what Cooperative Extension must do to remain viable in the years ahead. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal provides valuable food for thought on how we can most-effectively market our organization. As we ask ourselves "What Business Are We In?", it is imperative that we focus on Extension's strength. We know and serve the adults and youth of rural America, providing them education in agriculture and home economics. Extractions: The students must assume the role of the professional health educator and/or teacher with all that this entails. Student teachers must play this role well to the satisfaction of the supervising teachers. The school administrators (Vice-Principals, Principals, etc.) and the college supervisor. Mature, professional judgment is expected in all matters concerning responsibilities in the school. Whatever responsibilities are given, it is assumed that student teachers will reflect reliability and willingness in their performance. Professional ethics are the extension to, and application of, those principles of conduct associated with the good and the ideal. Tact, open-mindedness, and discretion are allied attributes in developing a professional image. The image the student teachers reflect as persons is only determined in part by their appearance, posture, and dress. Knowledge and display of the social amenities will be of equal importance. The manner in which the student teachers meet people, their poise and graciousness in social situations, even their eating habits, will be observed by others who are thinking of them as potential colleagues. Their voices, language, and conversational habits are assessed in informal situations as well as during their teaching.

Extractions: Debate Over Policy "I was given in marriage at age 13. I hadn't even reached puberty. My father was dead, so my uncle arranged the marriage with a neighbor. Now it is better; there is a law that says girls mustn't marry before the age of 17. That is good. You know, I hadn't had my period when I married. A month later it cameand a month after that I was pregnant. I had five childrenthree boys and two girlsbut one daughter was stillborn. "My children go to school, and I want them, both sons and daughters, to go as far as their ability lets them. I want them to have a good future, a profession, a happy life. I don't want them working in the fields, picking up straws and leftovers as I do. I would like so much to have gone to school. I would like to have opened my mind. I would have taught other people about things. I want to know everythingeverything you can learn if you have an education. I won't let my daughters marry earlier than 17. I want them to have time to finish their studies, prepare their trousseau, and prepare themselves for marriage. "Men are much better these days than they were before. They respect women more. Now they learn things, they are more understanding, they understand the rights of men and of women, too. And now a man can no longer divorce a wife he tires of. Before, a woman could be divorced, beaten, and poorly treated. That kind of thing doesn't exist anymore, thanks to President Bourguiba. Thanks to him and the laws, women are much better off today.
