Together, these constitute the British Isles - which is a geographical term for a group of islands lying off the north-west coast of mainland Europe. (Legally, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are largely self governing, and are not part of the United Kingdom.) The Administrative Regions into which the UK and Ireland are divided have changed frequently in recent years. However, in line with normal genealogical practice, this Information Service is structured according to the counties as shown in these maps of England, Scotland and Wales , and of Ireland , i.e., as they were prior to the re-organisation that took place in 1974 (1975 for Scotland). It is the digital version of a book available at four university libraries, including at the Geostat reference shelf (at the call number G103.5 .C65 1998). It organizes material into three kinds of categories: the political world, the physical world, and special places. Within these categories, the editors of the gazatteer have placed descriptive names, ranging from political divisions, geologic features, to parks, dams, and military bases. Its searching capabilities are built in part on these categories and descriptors. Like published encyclopediae, the Columbia Gazetteer of the World returns a concise description of a place and its location, including geographic coordinates. Large or culturally-significant places will have longer entries, including local history or near-by landmarks. The entry for Charlottesville, for instance, is as follows: "Charlottesville , independent city (area: 10 sq mi/26 sq km; 1990 pop. 40,341), (cap.) Extractions: Return to MSOP Introduction 1979 Edition Table of Contents All of us are aware of the human disasters which are sometimes caused by earthquakes. In the course of history, some of these have been of immense proportions, but the hazard is a continuous one in many parts of the world, and the few examples which follow will suffice to illustrate the magnitude of the problem: The rational response to any danger is to study the natural phenomenon which gives rise to it. In the case of earthquakes, the study has proceeded outwards from the centres of the most disastrous events. Thus the earliest scientific studies were confined to the observation of gross (macroseismic) effects in the region surrounding the so-called "epicentre", which is defined as the point on the surface of the ground at which the effects of the earthquake were most intense. At a later stage of development, it was found that earthquake waves could be detected instrumentally at great distances from the epicentre, and it was realised that the true source, or "focus" was often at a very considerable depth within the earth. Projects This view fits well with geography s traditional, resourcemanagement approach Libiszewski, Stephan, Water disputes in the Jordan basin region and their http://www.transboundarywaters.orst.edu/publications/geographical_perspectives/
Extractions: Water, Conflict and Co-operation: Geographical Perspectives Introduction The 261 international rivers, covering almost one half of the total land surface of the globe, provide ample opportunity for political tensions. Given water's pre-eminence as a critical resource, and one whose management is especially poorly defined in the international arena, it is of little surprise that 'water' and 'war' are being assessed together with increasing frequency. Over the past few decades, geopolitical literature on water's role in international conflict has increased. This theme is also evident in literature on environmental security. The 1990's, however, has seen a turn toward considering water in terms of cooperation, rather than conflict. The Middle East encompasses both the worst and the best of international water resources. The region therefore provides an excellent opportunity to explore water's role in violent conflict, and more importantly, in creative co-operative solutions to address international water resources. What is the role of water in international affairs; a cause of war, a builder of communities, or something else altogether? Until recently, theoretical geographical literature said little about water in its discussions of international conflict. Geopolitical literature continues to focus on issues of territorial organisation and power, the nation-state, and territory and population. Where water historically appears in geographical literature is in its role in economic development, most notably in human geography, resource management, and natural hazards studies. It is only in the last two decades that geopolitical scholars have turned their attention to water as a cause of war. Their research reflects environmental determinist thinking, as well as more elaborate conceptualisations of the role of water in international conflict and cooperation.

Introduction--TWRD 1994-1995 Resource materials in this directory on the Horn of Africa region, resources wereplaced under geographical headings in part 1 rather than the topical http://worldviews.igc.org/introduc.html
Extractions: Third World Resource Directory 1994-1995 Content Format of the directory The content focus of the Third World Resource Directory revolves around struggles for peace, justice, and integral development in regions of the world that have been labeled the Third World. Two cautionary statements are necessary at the outset. The first is that the nations and peoples of the so-called Third World should not be reduced to the problems or negative aspects of their societies that may be highlighted in the print and audiovisual materials in this directory. The complex richness of Rwanda, the editors realize, will not be found in the one 20-page pamphlet listed in this directory. By the same token the historical relationship between Arabs and Israelis should not be reduced to the conflicts between them that are given so much attention by the authors, editors, and filmmakers whose works appear in the Third World Resource Directory. Readers are encouraged to complement the resource materials in this directory with print and audiovisual resources that demonstrate the strengths, the pride, and the resourcefulness of the peoples of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. The second cautionary statement has to do with the term "Third World." While many activists and educators in and outside of the so-called Third World believe in the continued relevance of this admittedly flawed term, the concept is often popularly misunderstood to imply that people in Third World countries are third class citizens or that all inhabitants of Third World regions and nations are poor and powerless.
