Extractions: home videos guided tours articles ... iPIX Introduction by author Dr. Terry C. Hulbert Our east-oriented maps of the Holy Land are consistent both with the biblical data and with the way people in the land oriented themselves geographically throughout their history. Our four directions of the compass (north, south, east, west) are terms foreign to ancient culture. The Bible refers to the north as saphon, which means "toward the hidden region," to the south as negeb, the region of the Negev, to the west as 'am ("sea"), referring to the Mediterranean Sea, and to the east as qedem, "the region in front." Each of these four terms occurs in Gen 13:14-15 in the record of Yahweh's promise of the land to Abraham and his descendants. The Bible refers to the east as the direction where the sun rises and to the west to where the sun sets (Ps 103:12). The south is also called the "region of the right hand" and the north "the region of the left hand." Jacob named the last of his twelve children Benjamin, "son of the right hand" or "son of the south." Benjamin was born near Ephrath (Bethlehem) in the south in contrast to his other eleven sons who were born in the north (Gen 35:16-18). This east-orientation perspective continued even after the biblical period. For instance, The Medeba Map (about A.D. 565), crafted of over two million colored stone cubes, locates Jerusalem in the foreground and shows the Jordan River in the background flowing from the left (north) into the Dead Sea on the right (south).

Extractions: Northeast Sudan, called Nubia in ancient times, was colonized by Egypt about 2000 BC and was ruled by the Cush kingdom from the 8th cent. BC to the 4th cent AD Most of Nubia was converted to Coptic Christianity in the 6th cent., but by the 15th cent. Islam prevailed. In 1821 the north was conquered by Egypt, but a revolt by the nationalist Mahdi in 1881 forced an Egyptian withdrawal. In the 1890s an Anglo-Egyptian force under Herbert Kitchener destroyed the theocratic Mahdist state, and in 1899 most of Sudan came under the joint rule of Egypt and Britain (with Britain exercising actual control). Independence was achieved in 1956. In 1955 the animist southerners, fearing that the new nation would be dominated by the Muslim north, began a civil war that lasted 17 years. In 1972 Pres. Muhammad Gaafar al-Nimeiry ended the war by granting the south a measure of autonomy. However, his imposition of Islamic law on the entire country in 1983 reopened the conflict, and close to 2 million have died since, many from starvation. Nimeiry was deposed by a military coup in 1986. A short-lived civilian government was overthrown in 1989 by Lt. Gen. Omar Hassan al-Bashir; he officially became president in 1993 and was elected to the post in 1996. Bashir's government reinstituted Islamic law, banned opposition parties, and jailed dissidents. Throughout the 1990s the army mounted offensives against the rebels in S Sudan; several cease-fires were announced to allow the distribution of food to famine victims, but they did not hold. In recent years Sudan has supported Muslim fundamentalists internationally.

Land of Israel During the Reigns of David and Solomon The history of the evolving relationship between God and the Jewish people set forth in the the Hebrew Biblethe five books of the Torah (see Glossary), neviim (prophets), and ketuvim (writings)known to Christians as the Old Testament, begins with myths. The stories of creation, the temptation and sin of the first humans, their expulsion from an idyllic sanctuary, the flood, and other folkloric events have analogies with other early societies. With the appearance of Abraham, however, the biblical stories introduce a new ideathat of a single tribal God. Over the course of several centuries, this notion evolved into humanity's first complete monotheism. Abraham looms large in the traditions of the Jewish people and the foundation of their religion. Whether Jews by birth or by conversion, each male Jew is viewed as "a son of Abraham." It was with Abraham that God, known as Yahweh, made a covenant, promising to protect Abraham and his descendants, to wage wars on their behalf, and to obtain for them the land of Canaan, an area roughly approximate to modern Israel and the occupied West Bank (in another part of the Torah, God pledges to Abraham's descendants "the land from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates," an area much larger than historic Canaan). In exchange, the ancient Hebrews were bound individually and collectively to follow the ethical precepts and rituals laid down by God.

Extractions: ABSTRACT. About 98 species of Manihot are known. All of them are native to the New World and are concentrated in four regions in Brazil and Central America. All the Manihot species so far examined have 2n = 36 chromosomes. Interspecific hybrids between cassava and its wild relatives show relatively normal meiosis, and further generations can be obtained. Electrophoresis shows affinity among wild species of different sections, and between some of them and cassava. Both polyploidy and apomixis may have contributed to speciation in this genus. Polyploidy produced genetic variability, while apomixis is responsible for perpetuating new hybrid types adapted to different environments. Cassava may have originated by hybridization between two wild Manihot species, followed by vegetative reproduction of the hybrid.

Ultimately, cooperation between the two groups could mean improvements in areas as diverse as genetics research and credit card billing. At the Global Grid Forum in Toronto, business-computing and Web services heavyweights IBM, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Compaq Computer and Hewlett-Packard will converge with the academic powers that spawned the grid concept, which connects servers and storage systems into a worldwide pool of computing power. Both groups have been working on parallel visions for harnessing the power of networked computers. Merging the two movements will be culturally and technologically complicated, but the overall cause stands to benefit from the substantial progress made by each group so far.
