In "Gazetteers: Identifying Research Localities," Ancestry 12 (4) (July/August 1994), David Thackery notes the following: "Genealogy is, among other things, an exercise in geography. Successful research often hinges on identifying the locality in which one's ancestors lived. Once we know the locality, we are in a position to consult the records and histories for the area in an effort to piece together the lives of our forebears." Pinpointing modern place-names can begin with Frank R. Abate, ed., Omni Gazetteer of the United State of America , 11 vols. (Detroit: Omnigraphics, 1991). The work is subtitled "Providing Name, Location, and Identification for Nearly 1,500,000 Populated Places and Geographic Features in the Fifty States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories." Modern towns can also be sought in Bullinger's Postal and Shipper's Guide to the United States and Canada (Westwood, N.J.: Bullinger's, 1982) or

Extractions: Geographical information is available in a variety of formats for all audiences. A map is a depiction of certain boundaries of the earth; it may be a political map, showing boundaries for countries, states, counties, and cities. Other kinds include physical maps, which depict geographical features such as mountain ranges and bodies of water, or route (road) maps, which indicate highways, railroads, and the like. Most maps combine several of these features and provide a good deal of information about a geographical area. Atlases are bound collections of maps. They may focus on a single state, a country or region, or the entire world. Some atlases will focus on a theme, such as historical, economic, or social changes; the rest are considered general atlases. Both maps and atlases are useful for showing the relationship of one place to another in geographic terms. In addition to maps and atlases, there are other geographical reference tools, including gazetteers. A gazetteer is a dictionary of place names, giving location information and, often, thumbnail historical sketches of the places described. The federal government is a major producer of maps developed by many agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Commerce, Agriculture and the Bureau of Land Management. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the largest and best-known of government mapmakers; their topographic maps show detailed physical features including elevation. Maps and atlases are also produced by a few well-known and reputable commercial publishers, including National Geographic Society, Rand McNally, and Hammond. Prices for atlases can be considerable, but there are many desk atlases in a smaller size that are reasonably priced. In addition, interactive maps and atlases are now available on CD-ROM and on the Web.

Extractions: Topographical Dictionaries of England, Ireland, and Scotland Originally prepared by Samuel Lewis, the gazetteers reproduced on this Family Archive contain detailed information on English, Irish, and Scottish locales as they existed in the mid-1800s. A gazetteer is a topographical (or geographical) dictionary in which a location's political and physical features are defined. For example, for a location listed you may learn information on local industry, nearby towns, population, and primary landholders. This database contains The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, which provides a complete description of these countries and an alphabetical dictionary of their counties, dioceses, parishes, boroughs, etc. Gazetteers are very useful sources for genealogists because they help us locate and learn about the places our ancestor's lived. This well-known dictionary contains over 30,000 historical and statistical descriptions of the counties, cities, townships, and parishes of England as well as the Islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Man. The description includes the name of the place, its location, the number of inhabitants, and when available, any interesting facts such as landmark descriptions, industries, prominent individuals, schools, churches, and local activities. This database contains the six volume series, the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland. It is a geographical dictionary providing statistical, biographical, and historical information on Scotland's topography, as well as a general survey of Scotland as a whole. Gazetteers like this one are very useful sources for genealogists because they help us locate and learn about the places our ancestor's lived.

Extractions: ECAI has accomplished many of the goals it envisioned at its inception. At the same time we have a much greater understanding of the challenges facing implementation of a global infrastructure and standards for interoperative cultural atlases. The ECAI clearinghouse is stable and hosting significant spatial resources. It is an active portal for cultural spatial data resources. Can it now grow into being a significant global digital library resource? What can we learn about requirements for building the global digital library infrastructure from our experiences with the ECAI Clearinghouse? Can it fit into a future generation of Grid Digital Library resources? ECAI has developed a global consortium working to develop the genre of cultural atlases. Many scholars are working on digital atlases, including development of local, regional and global atlases. These atlases in turn are linked in a growing web of interactive dynamic atlases. Several recent projects will be highlighted including, Ivories of Begram, Afghanistan and the North American Missions electronic publication.
