Some laughed and just shrugged them off, others quivered as their imaginatons were challenged. Many people swear they are fact. In the early nineteen hundreds, children would wag school and ride around all day on their push bikes. (not much has changed since) The resourceful parents in an effort to get the children home before dark made up the story of the Hoop Snake. The Hoop Snake, it was told, would lie on the sides of the dirt roads waiting for the sounds of the children on their push bikes. Just as the unexpecting cyclist would pass, the snake would then coil up bitting its own tail to make the shape of a hoop, it would then roll down the road trying to catch the cyclist. If it caught its prey it would proceed to bite heavily into the heals of its victim and no child wanted this to happen. As an result the legend of the Hoop Snake was born.

Extractions: The Picts were a fascinating late prehistoric/early Celtic people living in areas of Scotland. They still live there they've simply been assimilated by the Scots (from Ireland) who settled there and brought in their own language and many of their own customs. This is only the preliminary portion of the Pictish Pages here, and is *very* incomplete! Feedback, comments, and corrections are solicited by Jehana I first became aware (more than vaguely academically) of the Picts during a summer vacation spent in Scotland during the summer of '95. I stumbled into Pictish carvings in the museum in Edinburgh which triggered something in me. A few days later I picked a train destination at random, and spent an uplifting, amazing time in the town of Arbroath. On the outskirts of that town is a collection of Pictish stones, housed unpretentiously and simply near the church upon whose grounds they'd been obtained. Somehow, I felt that I'd made "connection", with that time period, whatever this means. (I'll base some speculations upon that connection, but I won't ever promote such speculations as definitive proof, I promise. I'm a scientist I know better.) These sensations and connections persisted throughout my stay, and they revolved around the ancient Picts. I've been reading and thinking about them ever since. (As far as I know, I have no Pictish nor Scottish blood myself.)

Extractions: I hand out homework assignments for every class. All of the students are required to read and think about them; they will guide our discussion for the next class period. Over the course of the semester each student needs to hand in SIX written, roughly two page responses to six different homework questions. This is a method I use in all of my literature classes; because the due dates are flexible, what results is that on any given class, usually 1-2 students have developed a written, (hopefully) thoughtful response to the questions and we always have a starting point for discussion, AND my grading is staggered too. I have included some of my homework questions at the end of the syllabus below. REQUIRED TEXTS:
