Center for Science Teaching and Learning, TERC Tamara Shapiro Ledley , a senior scientist at TERC in Cambridge Massachusetts, received her PhD from MIT in meteorology 1983. She conducted a research program in Earth system science and global climate change with a focus on the polar regions at Rice University for 15 years and has authored over 30 scientific papers. She has also been involved in Earth system science education activities. These activities include the development of a museum exhibit to bring near real time images of the Earth to the public, the directing of teacher training programs in the Earth sciences, working with a high school students to study the influence of El Nino on the polar oceans, providing scientific reviews of Earth science text books and the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework. Dr. Ledley has received NSF grants to develop an Earth System Scientist Network in which she works with scientists and educators to develop scientists research projects for the participation of high school students; and to develop the Earth Exploration Toolbook which will provide teachers with step by step instructions on how to use Earth science datasets and tools in an educational context. Other current work includes directing the development the Earth as a System chapter of the Teachers Guide for the NSF sponsored GLOBE program, and contributing to the development of a group of museum exhibits for the NASA sponsored Museums Teaching Planet Earth project. She is also active in the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP Federation), the National Science Digital Library (NSDL), and in the Digital Library for Earth Systems Education (DLESE).
