Invasive Species The Forest Health Protection (FHP) unit is concerned about both preventing and treating forest tree problems on 16.0 million acres of state, private, industrial and county forest lands. The staff provides insect and disease management assistance to land managers as well as integrated pest management (IPM) programs and hazardous tree education. To anticipate future problems and identify current trends, Forest Health Protection personnel participate in programs such as the national Forest Health Monitoring program . They also work with the University of Wisconsin and USDA Forest Service Researchers, along with Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association. Our forests are generally in good health, though problems do exist in certain types. About 34% of the 16 million acres of commercial forest are in the maple-basswood type. This cover type is of a relatively young age and is in very good health, though the basswoods have been declining in some locations. The aspen-birch type makes up 20% of the commercial forest land but is decreasing at a rapid rate as older stands convert to maple and balsam fir. The oak-hickory type makes up about 17% of the commercial forest land. This acreage has increased slightly, but many of the older stands are overmature and are converting to more shade tolerant types. The conifers and the other hardwood types are in generally good health.

Extractions: It has been a very good year for killing hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)we hope. FPM conducted its first ever HWA suppression program this year. The first indications of effectiveness won't become apparent until later in the summer, when the settled nymphs start dying on treated trees. Later, after frost, the results will become more obvious as affected nymphs fail to develop the white wool that gives them their common name. If all goes well, treated hemlocks will have at least a two-year respite from HWA feeding. The weather generally was great for applying the pesticides, although it was a tad chilly early on at Ricketts Glen State Park (SP) and Michaux State Forest's Bubble Spring test site. Timing didn't seem to matter for the soil injections of Merit 75WSP (brand of imidacloprid insecticide), as long as the ground wasn't frozen. Stem injections of Imacide (imidacloprid in Mauget capsules) were very slow to work until the weather warmed up and the trees' sap flow started moving. Stem injections were required for all hemlocks within 50 feet of surface water to minimize the risk of insecticide movement into streams. All insecticides were applied at the minimum label rate. Extractions: Contacts The Division of Forest Pest Management is responsible for protecting forestland from insects, diseases, and other factors affecting forest health. The division promotes programs designed to improve or maintain the health and biodiversity of forest ecosystems. The division's mission is accomplished by evaluating factors affecting the health of trees and forests; utilizing integrated pest management techniques to mitigate the effects of factors on the forest ecosystem; and promoting forest health to the public and forest user community. Field Operations Section The Field Operations Section is responsible for monitoring biotic and abiotic factors that affect forest health. Various projects are implemented for the suppression, prevention, detection, diagnosis, investigation, and evaluation of forest health problems. These include pest surveys, implementation of forest pest suppression programs, biological control programs, tree mortality surveys, long-term monitoring projects for significant forest pest effects, coordination of annual forest pest surveillance flights over all forestland in the state, and conducting forest pest damage appraisals. The section also participates in multi-disciplinary/multi-agency field studies, coordinates forest health monitoring system data acquisition, and the training of field personnel.

Extractions: Enhanced forest plantation productivity through sustained pest management Improved pest management in forest plantations is essential if plantations are to realize their potential as a key source of global wood supply in the future, said experts at the Workshop on Pest Management in Tropical Forest Plantations, conducted by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) in Chanthaburi, Thailand, 25 to 29 May 1998. The objectives of the meeting, sponsored by the Thai Royal Forest Department, the FAO Forestry Research Support Programme for Asia and the Pacific (FORSPA) and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), were to assess emerging pest problems that will significantly affect plantation productivity and to review current practices of forest pest management. The possibility of a wider application of integrated pest management (IPM) practices was also discussed. The participants - from Australia, China, Costa Rica, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam -recommended systematic pest control through the meticulous monitoring of transboundary movements and the strengthening of quarantine measures. The need to improve methodologies for assessing the impact of some pests, especially those that cause defoliation, was pointed out. Participants also noted the necessity to reduce drastically the reliance on insecticides and to use more silvicultural measures to minimize pest infestation.
