Some have planned activities, others are excursions, incursions, and information sources such as books, online pages and so on. We have also had a look at most of these and added our own comment on what the resource consists of and how it could be used. There are constant changes in availability of the resources and development of new resources so you may find some difficult to get hold of or discover new resources that we have not included here. We would be very interested in hearing about these changes from you and will update this list when necessary 'Our Bushland Classroom'. 2000. Ireland K., Bayswater Integrated Catchment Management (BICM). North East Catchment Committee (Cost $45 inc. GST) This great resource has 20 activities on environmental themes for each primary year level. There is information linking the activities directly into the curriculum framework, with teachers' notes, programming sheets, lists of incursions and excursions as well as lists of other resources. While focusing on the bush lands there are also water-based activities. This resource has been tested at Noranda Primary School 'DO Something - Environmental Education in Action in Primary Schools'

I was in the UK three years ago for your annual get together, and met Andy, George, Simon, etc Like Cathy, I too have enjoyed your book. There is a little bit going on on the net about PC. Not the least of the problems is that PC covers so many damn areas! So for example, I have been but one of a number of fairly consistent contributors to alt.sustainable.agriculture rec.gardens sci.bio.ecology rec.community.gardens sci.agriculture alt.bio.microbiology and various other newsgroups (until just recently, when my supplier dropped his connection!) Most are on alt.sustainable.agriculture as this group is the result of a merger about two years ago of sust.agric and a very inactive permaculture group that ran as int.permacultur on pegasus and other APC networks(?)

Hill At some point in the future, agronomists will wonder how present day scientists could have continued to knowingly advocate the expansion of specialized production systems that emphasize practices such as chemically managed row-crop monocultures, which result in soil erosion and de gradation, and water exhaustion and contamination; or knowingly to stand idly by in the face of deforestation and desertification, loss of biodiversity, displacement of farmers and loss of rural communities, and increased dependence on nonrenewable resources, synthetic chemicals and antibiotics, subsidies, and markets that meet distant luxury desires versus local basic needs (Brown et al. 1984). My explanation of why this madness continues may be as shocking for the readers as witnessing the present level of degradation is for me. Throughout history we have invariably blamed others for our tragedies the gods, other nations, certain groups within society, lack of resources and power, multinationals, and political incompetencebut we have rarely examined the contribution of our own behavior, accepted our responsibilities , and set out to change our behavior . Thus my analysis of the situation is primarily psychosocial, rather than political, and that is exactly what makes such a proposition so difficult to accept, because for me this requires that I first recognize and act On my responsibilities and change myself before pointing fingers at others.

Extractions: Location: Japan, Thailand Problem Overview: High use of chemical fertilizers by farmers and the erosion of rural agrarian communities Agriculture in a country needs to be highly efficient and be economically viable in order to be competitive and to sustain farmers livelihoods. At the same time the production methods should be environmentally friendly and sustainable and the food produced must be safe to consumers. Agricultural development, post 1945, has been leaning toward achieving the first goal while neglecting the second. This is not a sustainable basis for agricultural development. The systems were developed in response to the failure of conventional agriculture to achieve these twin goals. Problems associated with conventional agricultural practice in Thailand: The Thai government has promoted high input, export orientated agricultural systems in a bid to increase the country's growth rate, however the environmental and socio-economic effects of this agricultural strategy has resulted in the retardation of the country's agricultural sector. More specifically poor farm management techniques and inappropriate use of agro-chemicals has resulted in soil erosion and soil exhaustion (Tantemsapya 1995).

Extractions: Contributions to the Discussion UPA-PLANNING SUMMARY SESSION 3, WEEK 1 Dear participants of the UPA-Planning group, Last week's discussion started with a debate on space requirement and availability in urban settings. The original questions on how to integrate UPA in Planning processes and who are the stakeholders to be involved were only touched on at the end of this past week. Lena Jarlov is of the opinion that lower-density housing areas are needed, especially for the urban poor, so that they can grow more of their own food on their plots. Leo van den Berg reacted to this by saying that we should not aim with UPA at most of the urban poor producing most of their food around their homes. That would make the urban infrastructure far too expensive. A better way to enable those urban poor (and others!) who have the relevant skills and/or commitment to do agriculture is to plan and build new urban neighbourhoods in strings, following wherever possible the slightly higher grounds, leaving "green corridors" between them for agricultural production, forestry, water conservation, sport fields, etc. This is the well-known urban planning model of "fingercity".

The oxen handler is responsible for the work done by the oxen and for their welfare. The working day should begin early in tropical countries, to make use of the coolest hours. The working hours in Africa are normally between 6-11 in the morning. The handler must exercise patience and sympathy towards the oxen, not overworking them when tired.
