Resources / Parent to Parent of PA S earch our site: BY KELLY McKINNEY Parents whose children began attending Head Start this year through a partnership with Intermediate Unit 1 are giving high marks to both agencies for meeting the needs of children with disabilities. Through a collaboration between Community Action Southwest - Head Start's parent organization - and the IU, nearly 30 children with disabilities were enrolled this past fall in the preschool serving about 140 students at the former Patten School in Washington. "It's been wonderful," said Rita Csonka, whose 4-year-old daughter, Kathy, has attended IU programs for speech therapy. "It has done a world of good as far as maturity. She shares better and helps other kids."

Parent Organizations National Coalition for parent Involvement in education (NCPIE) The basic goalof the pennsylvania parent Information Resource Center is to initiate and http://www.temple.edu/lss/cpie/cpieparentorgs.htm
Extractions: Parent Involvement Organizations We have organized our list of parent involvement organizations into three categories: parent membership organizations that provide the means to join together locally with other parents in pursuit of family concerns, parent support organizations that design and provide direct support to parents, and parent advocacy organizations that work on their own to pursue issues that are vital to parental concerns. Membership Support Advocacy Together, these organizations give voice to parents by affirming, validating, and legitimizing parental issues and concerns, and by helping parents meet the challenges of managing their childrens education and well-being. Together, they establish the means for the exploration and integration of diverse ideas, strategies, and learning opportunities in an atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging. As a result, these organizations empower parents to take action. By connecting parents to school officials, community members, other parents, knowledge, and powerful allies, these organizations build bridges and networks that support schools and sustain whole communities.

This is a collection of Internet and other resources which parents of children with PDD PDD-NOS autism Asperger's Syndrome , or hyperlexia may find useful. All the information concerns teaching methods that are a branch of applied behavior analysis (ABA) called behavioral intervention . One of the methods is discrete trial training . Some (inaccurately) use the term " Lovaas method." We worked hard to get complete information, implement a program, and have our school system pay for it. My hope is to help spare other parents (and their children) some of the pain and wasted time we went through. Here are all the helpful resources I've found, with the best places to start marked . The essentials of starting a program for your child are marked to . Please also see the frequently asked questions about ABA and autism . Extractions: PDF version Throughout your child's school years, there is always a need to communicate with school: teachers, administrators, and others concerned with your child's education. There are also times when the school needs to communicate with you. This is particularly true when your child has a disability and is receiving special education services. Some of this communication is informal, such as phone calls, comments in your child's notebook, a chat when picking your child up from school, or at a school function. Other forms of communication are more formal and need to be written down. Letters provide both you and the school with a record of ideas, concerns, and suggestions. Putting your thoughts on paper gives you the opportunity to take as long as you need to:
