This children's village named "Beaver Run" after the creek that borders it, is located on 77 woodland acres in rural Chester County, one hour west of Philadelphia. There are several other facilities on the grounds to serve the many needs of the community including a schoolhouse, a medical building, a community building, a barn, and a swimming pool. Beaver Run, a member of the Camphill Association of North America, is part of the growing network of international Camphill communities. Camphill was founded in 1939 in Scotland by Dr. Karl Koenig, a respected Viennese pediatrician. It now has more than 80 therapeutic communities worldwide which includes several thousand people. The centers have in common the caring for - and sharing of life with - children and adults with developmental disabilities. Camphill provides services in the fields of education, medicine, nursing, therapy, agriculture, food, and crafts production. Camphill communities are located in Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, North and South America, Africa, New Zealand, and Russia. Camphill's educational philosophy called "Curative Education", is a form of the famous Waldorf teaching method based on the social, educational, and spiritual insights of Dr. Rudolf Steiner. Steiner (1861-1925), an Austrian scientist and philosopher, sought a more complete understanding and appreciation of man's spiritual nature and destiny. Camphill recognizes the relationship between any two people - teacher to pupil, physician to patient, caregiver to care receiver - is the basis for all healing and social renewal. In such relationships, one receives as much as one gives. This human interdependence and reciprocity play a central role in the daily life of Beaver Run.
