McCormick was named chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges Universities System in December 2000 by the Board of Trustees and began his term in July 2001 as leader of the system of 32 higher education institutions. As chancellor, Dr. McCormick is responsible to the 15-member Board of Trustees for the administration of all facets of the system. With seven state universities and 25 two-year colleges on 53 campuses across the state, the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System serves about 240,000 students in credit courses each year. Employing more than 16,000 full- and part-time faculty and staff, the system has an annual budget of about $1.4 billion. Before coming to Minnesota, Dr. McCormick served as the founding chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, created July 1, 1983. The state system comprises 14 universities with a $1 billion budget. He left that position as the most senior system head in the country, having served continuously as the Pennsylvania public university system chief executive for 18 years. Dr. McCormick was president of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania from 1973 to 1983, and served as a professor and administrator for Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania for the previous eight years. Weis Creationists have been busy this year on several fronts. They have pursued their goal of introducing creationism into science courses through state legislatures, through boards of education, and lately—ominously—through Congress. On every front, however, they have been met by AIBS and other scientific organizations striving to counteract their efforts. Bills that would undermine the teaching of evolution have been introduced in several state legislatures. An Arkansas bill prohibiting the teaching of "fraud"—including, they claim, Archaeopteryx and various fossil hominids—was only narrowly defeated. The Education Committee of the Michigan House is considering a bill calling evolution an "unproven theory" and specifying that students be taught "intelligent design" theory, a catchphrase for creationism. A Louisiana resolution took an unexpected approach, asserting that Darwin was a racist whose evolutionary theory was responsible for Hitler’s genocidal pursuit of an Aryan master race. That resolution passed the Louisiana House, but only after references to Darwin were removed. We are holding the line, thanks to Ellen Paul, the AIBS Public Policy Committee, the evolution listserv managers, and others in AIBS, as well as our colleagues at the American Geophysical Union and the American Geological Institute and other societies. We hope to take a more proactive approach in the coming year. I have no doubt that the creationists will continue their efforts, and we will have to step up ours to counteract them. Eternal vigilance will have to be our watchword.

The study examined how school boards and their districts are applying information technology (IT) to better engage their local communities and constituents, and improve the delivery of services and quality of education to public schools. More than 2,500 school districts were invited to participate in the survey, which grouped school boards into three categories based on student population: More than 15,000 students; 2,501 to 15,000 students ; and 2,500 or fewer students.
