Molly, whose family lives at Lake Petersburg, is studying deaf education at MacMurray College in Jacksonville. Theme Course: Family This course will explore familyrelated issues in the Social Sciences, to a new pen pal describing a personality-revealing anecdote about a sibling. http://sites.unc.edu/composition/materials/assignments/theme12texts/family_theme
Extractions: The advantage of the "family" theme for English 12 is that, in David Bartholomae and Anothony Petrosky's terms, it allows students throughout the term to "study a single problem, one easily located within the[ir] immediate experience and knowledge ... using the basic methods of university inquiry" ( Facts, Artifacts, and Counterfacts , 1986, pp29-30). This course will explore family-related issues in the Social Sciences, the Humanities, and the Natural Sciences. Throughout the course, students will compose several kinds of academic writing tasks (and some non-academic ones), to challenge them to employ different rhetorical strategies and to engender discussion about various discourse conventions This is the unit submitted as part of this Herschel award entry. The goals for this unit are: (1) to familiarize the students with the Social Science discourse community and its disciplinary practices by doing as well as by reading and writing; (2) to introduce students to academic discourse through a subject in which they have the authority of experiential knowledge; and (3) to build cohesion and relations among the group members. In-class writing, discussion, some reading, the two feeders, and "fieldwork" will contribute toward the Unit Paper. That final paper presents the group's method and findings in a limited experiment designed to test a hypothesis about the impact of sibling birth order on personality, by trying to predict birth order when it isn't known.

Yet, most parents have no training. No one can MAKE a child eat, sleep, listen or go potty! Kids are kids. No wonder parents are so often frustrated. These four steps can help you avoid the frustration-to-anger trap. 1. Stop, separate and breathe. This is a crucial first step. Actually saying: "STOP! I’m getting angry!" to yourself and the child can be very effective. Take a few deep breaths or do a mundane chore. Taking your mind off the problem for a few minutes can help you gain control of your emotions.
