Extractions: Starting a Girls RISE Project In this section of the Girls RISE Web page you will find the key elements of the Girls RISE program followed by implementation questions that will help you adapt this program to meet your needs. Elements of a Successful Program 1. Target Middle School Girls Rationale: Middle school is a critical time that influences girls' future interest in science and engineering. Decisions that girls make in the middle school years affect their ability to enroll in advanced level courses in high school. Activities/Resources: Recruit program participants by contacting: Schedule time for middle school girls to talk with high school girls taking Physics or AP Calculus. 2. Career Explorations Rationale: There is a low level of awareness among girls about what engineers do on a daily basis as well as about the academic requirements to become an engineer. An increased level of awareness provides girls with knowledge of engineering career options. Activities/ Resources: Ask the local chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) or an engineering firm to sponsor a career day or Parent/Daughter night to discuss the changing role of women in the work force and the skills girls need for engineering related job. Take your girls to an Expanding Your Horizons Conference.

Several of their small grandchildren play beneath a treehouse, while the adults sip fresh lemonade and eat Miriam's homemade chocolate cake on the porch. It's an idyllic family scene as dusk slowly descends. But it hasn't always been this peaceful. In 1990, the Kadmons' youngest son, Amnon, then 19, was killed while serving his compulsory military service in southern Lebanon.

During her lecture, Presmeg focused on her research on visualization. Specifically, Presmeg discussed the instrument she created to determine whether one is a visualizera person who uses visual mental images to solve mathematical problemsand how she used that construct to shed light on why visualizers often do not do well in mathematics courses and to develop methods by which teachers might help visualizers succeed in the classroom. "Dr. Presmeg's body of work in mathematics education research establishes her as a leading international scholar," said Dean Olson. "Her lecture was insightful and impressive, and I feel honored to serve on the same faculty with Dr. Presmeg." Click here for full story...

Extractions: Several neighborhoods separate 70 second graders at Seven Hills Lotspeich, Madisonville and Corryville Catholic, Corryville But they share a bond that could be a model for the entire city, said teacher Anne Greenwald at Seven Hills. The two schools will celebrate their end-of-the-year Penpal Picnic and Play Day, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. Teachers Greenwald and Kara Meador of Seven Hills started the pen pal relationship with second graders at Corryville Catholic, taught by Helen Davis and Patti VanHa in 1993. Greenwald said they usually begin writing to each other in October. "This year, we visited Corryville Catholic in February," Greenwald said. She said the students played bingo, ate lunch together and performed a play on the Underground Railroad. Throughout the year, they continued to write, exchanging such things as Easter candy. "This helps them to learn about writing invitations, addressing envelopes and learning how to RSVP,'' Greenwald said. She said this year they wrote the invitation to the picnic on the computer for the first time.

Extractions: Earth Science Around the Globe John Capozzoli's eighth grade Earth Science class has been studying Ghana through the National Gardening Association's Ambassador Club. His students are studying Ghanaian culture, agricultural practices, and conservation methods using the curriculum lessons, school stories, pen-pal correspondence with Ghanaian students, and an online discussion forum. The class decided to monitor their own water usage after realizing most people don't have seemingly endless supplies of clean water. The science sleuths removed the sink drains and discharge pipes in the science lab and set up a small pipe directed into a five gallon bucket to measure the amount of greywater used (any water that has been used, except water from toilets, is called greywater). During their class, they monitored the buckets, measured the water levels, and recorded the amount of water collected. The students charted the amount of water used per day over a month's time; they estimated an average of 400 gallons of water a day was used in the science lab sink alone!

Extractions: STAFF WRITER April 13, 2005 Swabb, 25, was greeted like a hero when he arrived on campus yesterday. As he walked hand in hand with one kindergartner, students lined the hallways clapping and cheering. Many waved flags, displayed banners, blew bubbles, whistled, clapped and sang, "You're a Grand Old Flag." Swabb told the children that all 163 Marines in his Apache Company, based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, returned home safely. "A big part of that was the support from kids like you," he said. "It's nice to know you're appreciated. It makes it much easier to be away from our families for seven months." The students also sent him granola bars, tuna, crackers, music CDs and pictures of themselves.
Catholic Family Life Articles Living In Families science is so much easier to learn with hands on experiments. If you areteaching your child Spanish, you could look for a pen pal in Spain or any other http://www.catholicmom.com/family2.htm
Extractions: For instance, say you are studying Art History. You want to teach your child about famous artists. You would go to sites or books about the artists and make a list of questions for your child to answer. Here is a site about Leonardo da Vinci: http://www.mos.org/sln/Leonardo/, visit here to find facts about this artist and make up your question and answer sheet. You could play one of several ways, have the child answer the questions knowing the subject is Leonardo da Vinci, make a list of facts from your questions and have the child guess who the facts are about or if your child is old enough, have him or her do the research and question sheet then test you! I like the last choice as I feel s/he would absorb more information this way.

AOG has approximately 30 volunteers that contribute to student success by tutoring students, reading to younger students, having lunch with students, and assisting at carnivals and fund raisers. The following activites are some that AOG participate in. Bringing up Grades One creative program AOG has with Carnall is Bringing Up Grades. Each school year students are given the opportunity to design a new "BUG CLUB" logo for t-shirts. Each nine weeks every student that brings up their grades, or keeps the same grades, is awarded a BUG Club t-shirt purchased by AOG. The t-shirts are presented during an Awards Assembly by AOG President, Super Bug Mike Carter. Each student is also given a $5 McDonald's certificate. T-shirts are presented three times during the school year. Career Day Each year during Career Week AOG and Carnall have a Career Day for the sixth grade students at AOG facilities. The students are transported to the downtown office where they tour each department. The students then go to the AOG operations department where they tour the different departments. Each student receives a hat or visor. Lunch is then served to the students in the training room. This is a very enjoyable trip for the students.
Extractions: Content Area Studies for Early Childhood Developed through the expertise of early childhood educators from four countries, spanning three continents, Connectors is written to provide teachers and child care directors with authentic studies, particularly in the social studies. The developmental-interaction approach advocates that children should study their immediate world of family, home, school, and community. Most of the topics are directly related to the ecology of all children. A few of the studies may be more culturally specific. Content area studies allow teachers to organize content into meaningful and interesting contexts. This integrated approach to curriculum development allows for and encourages students to pursue intererests related to content. Emphasis is placed on the process as well as the product. How children learn while engaged in the study is equally as valuable as what they learn. As children become co-investigators with the teacher and interact with the environment, they become independent learners who are capable of making decisions. Because children are involved in their own learning, they are constantly evaluating their own process. Every study in this text has been taught by one of the authors, and tested in the real world with children.
