Buffalo Zoological Gardens Description: The third oldest zoo in the United States, this 23-acre park is dedicated to the preservation of wild and exotic species from around the world and is an active participant in global conservation efforts. More than a thousand animals are housed here, among them some rare and unusual species such as the potoroo, a marsupial from Australia, and the lesser galago, a small bushbaby from Africa. Other animals include grizzly, Kodiak, and polar bears; red pandas; reindeer; tamarins; Indian rhinos and meerkats, as well as an array of reptiles and birds. During the 20 years that this course has been conducted, we have encountered Havard oaks, sand dunes, giant sequoias and at least one snake on every trip. On the other hand, we have observed ring-tailed cats during 7 of the trips, at least one bear five different years (one walked through our campground), Gila monsters in the field on only five trips and either more than 25 snakes or all the desert wildflowers in their most bountiful blossoms only once (each in different years). The fundamental goal of this course is to provide students the opportunity to experience some of the major biomes and communities of the American Southwest. Emphasis will be placed on the physical and floral elements that characterize terrestrial communities, the physical and biotic features of marine intertidal communities, and some general characteristics of a few lentic and lotic (freshwater) systems. Faunal elements are not ignored, but are developed when and if they are encountered. In a typical year, we usually observe or examine a few species of freshwater fishes (and several marine species in the Monterey aquarium), 10-15 species of amphibians, 25-35 species of reptiles, 40-50 species of birds and 20-30 species of mammals.

The Upper Woodland features plants native to the southeastern United States. There is a 1.25 mile-long nature trail (not wheel chair accessible) through Storza Woods, one of the last remaining hardwood forests in Atlanta. Home to rare and endangered plants, the Dorothy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory features orchids and a collection of poison-arrow frogs. A video is mailed to teachers to use before their scheduled visit with classes as a pre-visit activity. The garden features speakers and special programs. Birdsong Nature Center Birdsong Nature Center offers natural history instruction with intensive field experience for school groups and the public. A series of 30 nest boxes are placed in appropriate habitats along Birdsong Trail, and are maintained and monitored throughout the year for bluebird activity and nesting success. Designed to teach people how to identify and appreciate native birds, Bird Window has become the most fascinating attraction in Birdsong Nature Center. A large glass pane extends from floor to ceiling and from wall to wall, and overlooks a bird feeding station. Gardens around the house have been planted and landscaped to attract birds and other wildlife. The Listening Place is a pavilion overlooking Bog Bay Swamp where herons, anhingas, wood ducks, alligators and other wildlife can be observed.
