Extractions: What this 11-acre zoo within Prospect Park lacks in size it makes up in intentions, with an ambitious, ecology-friendly approach to teaching kids about nature. Established in Prospect Park in the late 1800s with a small menagerie of animals, it officially transformed into the Prospect Park Zoo when it opened to the public in 1935. Thanks to the intervention of the Wildlife Conservation Society, open, more naturalistic habitats replaced bars, cages and pits when the zoo was renovated in 1989. Included in the renovation were three major exhibit areas created with the specific goal of reaching out to children. The World of Animals allows kids to interact with kangaroos, prairie dogs and wallabies as they walk along a path in an open area where the animals dwell.
