Guide to Online High School Courses is a product of the National Education Association, Virtual High School, Inc., and American Association of School Administrators, CNA Corporation, IBM Corporation, National Association of State Boards of Education, National School Boards Association, Verizon Communications. Information technology is promoting fundamental changes in how we teach and learn. Barriers of time and place are tumbling as technology offers new choices and opportunities for students and educators. Over the last 20 years or more, American schools have embraced distance learning tools to enhance students' educational opportunities. Satellite, microwave, cable, and broadcast television first gave students access to courses not otherwise available in their home schools. More recently, multimedia Internet-based technologies have provided even more powerful options for teaching and learning at a distance. With virtually all schools now linked to the Internet, states, districts, and individual schools are increasingly adopting online courses to expand their curricula. The appeal of online courses is evident: they can increase the range of course offerings available to all students as well as provide educational access to special students (for example, homebound, incarcerated, and atypical students for whom regular classrooms are not effective). In addition, they provide an alternative method of instruction, one that adults are increasingly using for both professional and personal development. The number of students participating in online courses is large and growing dramatically. One estimate is that 30,000 high school students have taken an online course

This is the only really good news we have ever had regarding the protection of parental and pupil rights. This new information will strike at the heart of many destructive values- changing federal education programs, but especially at the heart of President Bush's plans to require mandatory mental health screening of our children in the government schools. (New Freedom Commission on Mental Health). Yesterday, I did an Internet search on "protection of human subjects from government programs related to mental/psychological/psychiatric/physical experimentation, etc., etc.". My hope was to find an old law covering this subject which would be broad enough to encompass the mental health screening of our children called for under President Bush's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. I had been informed by persons and organizations involved in opposing the President's Mental Health Initiative that the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment would not protect our children due to the fact it covered only programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and that the mental health screening programs to be implemented in the public schools under the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health were funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, and therefore not covered by the Amendment.

In response to the request to fill in a Family Feedback Form found in the Diversity Book bag we have constructed the following letter. We wish to make our feedback known publicly. Extractions: Click Here to Visit our Sponsor by Marshall Fritz I would like all children to enjoy the benefits of schools chosen by their parents. If we learn a lesson from our own history it could be possible in very short time. In America we don't use the government to run the churches, and considering our diversity, we have admirable religious harmony. I am a religious man, but I think this 'hands off' policy is America's greatest gift to the human race. Now, in the mid-1990s, I believe the miserable condition of our 'public' schools has us poised to consider another great gift to ourselves and the entire human race: the separation of school and state. To show why separation is necessary, I'd like to tease some insights from the origin, meaning, or misuse of several words. Marva Collins, founder of Westside Preparatory School in Chicago, has gained international fame as an educator for what she has done with public-school castoffs. I've seen her in action, and she gives them what she has plenty of, courage. She 'encourages' them to do their best, and they do. In English the en prefix can mean to provide, transfer, or somehow evoke or instill. Marva likes to say, "If it ain't caught, it wasn't taught." In other words, if the children aren't 'getting it,' the person in front of the class is a talker, not a teacher. Some talkers admit the distinction by saying they 'covered the subject' as opposed to 'taught a lesson.' Professor Howard Hendricks of Dallas Theological Seminary says that distinction is easy to grasp in Hebrew because that language has no distinct word 'to teach.' Instead, a form of the word 'learn' is used to mean 'to produce learning.' We could translate it more correctly if we had the word 'enlearning.' Indeed, we could avoid some mistakes in education if we replaced the word teaching with enlearning. Because we 'teach what we are,' a person who tries to enlearn values he does not hold is simply enlearning hypocrisy.

Extractions: By Father Bob Papi used with permission Parents sometimes have hearts filled with anguish. This comes about when, prompted by the Holy Spirit, they fulfill their sacred duty as the primary educators of their children and encounter systems and individuals who usurp in various ways this primary and sacred, this inviolable right and duty of parents. Here, to assist parents, to encourage and comfort them, are some of the teachings of Holy Mother Church regarding this sacred parental right and duty. It must be stated clearly that whenever these parental rights are denied, frustrated, belittled, usurped, or interfered with - assuming the parents are themselves being faithful to their commensurate duties which accompany these rights - then those persons or institutions placing themselves as obstacles to the parents also place themselves as obstacles of Christ, His Holy Gospel, and therefore against the Church as well. This is a most serious matter, one which Holy Mother the Church Herself regards as very serious indeed. That in many cases there exists a conflict between authentic parental rights and duties, between authentic Catholic teaching, morality, faith, and the notions of the modern era affecting educators and educational institutions, is but an example of the suffering of Christ within His Body the Church in our day.

Extractions: June 2001 Parents can play a number of important roles in their relationship with their child's school-organization members, care providers, political advocates, and facilitators of professional decisions. This digest examines the special roles of parents of children with disabilities in planning for the education of their children and discusses how educators can work effectively with parents to create meaningful individualized education programs (IEPs). The parents' role as committee members and educational decision makers in creating IEPs was established in 1975 by the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, now known as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Even though parent involvement is a defining feature of IDEA, Congress, as part of the 1997 reauthorization of IDEA, believed that parental involvement needed strengthening. As a result, parents' rights and responsibilities are again in the forefront as a necessary ingredient for appropriate and individualized educational programming, mandating that schools provide an opportunity for active parental participation in decisions about the education of children. The involvement of parents in the IEP process has many benefits:

It is designed for those who intend to advocate for their children in meetings with administrators, hearing officers, and school boards. Because every situation is different and the law is subject to change, this pamphlet cannot substitute for individualized legal advice. There is a strong drive in this family-oriented community to involve parents in their children's education, and a conscious effort to bridge the language barrier in order to make that possible.
