Recreation opportunities Located in the heart of the beautiful Kittitas Valley and in the center of Washington State, historic Ellensburg is home to year round recreational activities, numerous events, excellent shopping and dining, and a variety of performing and visual arts. Ellensburg, which is approximately 110 miles east of Seattle and 170 miles west of Spokane, has become a popular hub for concerts at the nearby Gorge Amphitheater, water skiing on the Columbia River, golf, fly fishing, river rafting, snow mobiling, and cross country skiing. Ellensburg's historic shopping district offers a wide variety of cultural activities, eclectic shops, pubs, and restaurants. The topography includes snow-capped mountains, irrigated valley land, desert terrain, and two major rivers, the Yakima and the Columbia. The ground is generally sloping, rising to an elevation between 1,500 and 1,580 feet above sea level. The Cascade Mountains to the west effectively block much of the rain from the "wet side" of the state, producing a dry climate with less than 10 inches of rainfall a year. There are four definite seasons and an Ellensburg breeze in the spring and summer months. In 1868 the first families entered the Ellensburg area, but the year 1871 saw the arrival in the Kittitas Valley of the man beyond all others who may be called the father of Ellensburg. This man was John Alden Shoudy. From his wife, Mary Ellen Stewart of California, our city received its name, and a considerable part of the town was laid out on land belonging to Mr. Shoudy. He, a veteran of the Civil War, had come to the Pacific Coast from Illinois and had become engaged in business with his brother-in-law, Dexter Horton, one of the most prominent of Seattle's capitalists and founder of one of the greatest banking houses of that city. In 1871, a proposition developed in Seattle to make an improved road connection with the Yakima Country. As a representative of this movement, Mr. Shoudy came to the valley in 1871 and his visit resulted in his permanent residence and in the founding of our town.

Dr Gabbe's study found that motor sports, horse-riding and power boating are the most dangerous sporting and recreational activities in Victoria. The study, published in the August issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine , assessed data from the Victorian State Trauma Registry and the National Coroners' Information System. It showed there were 150 cases of serious injury and 48 deaths in Victoria as a result of sport and recreation between 2001 and 2003. The study found motor sports accounted for 32 per cent of all cases of serious injury or death. Horse riding made up 14 per cent.

Extractions: BACK NEXT ALTERNATIVE D: EXPANDED RECREATION This alternative would continue the existing character of visitor use and experience, with a predominant emphasis on water-related recreation, and would expand day and overnight use facilities to accommodate greater visitor use. This approach would in general incorporate the objectives and the development proposals contained in the park's 1976 master plan. Lake zoning would be used to separate loud and high speed boating activities from activities such as sailing and fishing. PLAN GOALS AND ACTION PLAN Resource management would be similar to Alternative B, Minimum Requirements, with efforts aimed at meeting basic requirements for resource identification and protection and avoiding irretrievable losses to natural and cultural resources. Goal 1: Visitors to Whiskeytown Lake enjoy a wide range of water-based and water-related activities, including boating, fishing, water fowl hunting, swimming, camping, and picnicking. This alternative would add to the capacity of the area to sustain use by developing a major new day and overnight use area and expanding the capacity of the Oak Bottom area. More highly developed and specialized facilities and services, both NPS and concession, would also be included in this alternative. Action Plan: Maintain existing water-related facilities and services. Lifeguard services would be retained and expanded as needed.
