Animals, birds, fish, geometric shapes, puppets, toys and masks are among the models that even very young children can learn to make in just one sitting. HISTORY THE CRANE WHO WERE THE FIRST PAPER FOLDERS? ORIGAMI SYMBOLS HISTORY The art of making paper from pulp originated in China in the year 102A.D. Paper then became more available to the masses. The secret of making paper was kept in China for several hundred years and finally made its way through Korea and into Japan. A Buddhist monk is said to have carried this secret .The introduction of paper making to Japan several hundred years later coincided with the development of their religion and soon became part of the lives of its people. Colors and silk threads were added and origami was held in high esteem. Gifts were decorated with "noshi." Noshi had particular fold patterns depending on the gift. In Japan, at one time origami was taught in schools but today, children are generally taught origami at home. Holidays are celebrated with colorful origami decorations made by the family. On children's day (formerly boy's day), children make colorful carp: a fish that swims upstream, against the current. This symbolizes strength. [From an article in the Japan Times . JW] Jim Mockford, a Japanese language teacher in Washington State, USA, reports that in the fall of 1995 a class of 20 of his students made an ori-tsuru (paper crane), out of a single sheet of paper that measured over 23 feet wingtip to wingtip. Of course there have been larger cranes made from many sheets of paper pasted together such as the Maebashi record (see above), but Jim's crane seems to be the largest made out of a single square sheet of uncut, unpasted paper. It was a great teambuilding project and a lot of fun. Paul Jackson, in November, 1980 at the University College, London, successfully folded and banged the classic model made from a paper rectangle 108 ins. by 66 ins. See report in the BOS magazine no. 86, pages 14 and 15.

Extractions: The White, Yellow, Red and Black cranes were adapted from a different 1000 crane mobile created in 1992, as 1 of 10, for the Winnipeg International Children's Festival 10th anniversary by Children of the Earth School. They represent the North, East, West and South. The many-coloured cranes were chosen to represent all the people of the earth, the three levels of the mobile to represent, the air, land and water. The mobile to represent "Creating A Balance". "Creating A Balance" is a 1 or 2 week long workshop that introduces students to the Art of Origami as a means of making a creative statement. Brian presents a history of the art of paper folding through storytelling and demonstrations. The students, through their creative efforts create a mobile sculpture. This brings the whole school together for a presentation focusing on the idea of "Creating A Balance" with nature, the environment and with each other.

Japan, October 30th 1995. northern Japan. presumably this required a rather large square of paper. (The straits Times newspaper 4th August 1998) A Square 33m by 33m used to fold a crane.
