Paleontology 137 Microfossils paleontology 137 Dr. J Bret Bennington. Micropaleontology and palynology.Stromatolites. Although stromatolites are megascopic organosedimentary structures http://people.hofstra.edu/faculty/J_B_Bennington/137notes/microfossils.html
Extractions: Dr. J Bret Bennington Micropaleontology and Palynology Stromatolites Although stromatolites are megascopic organo-sedimentary structures more within the realm of sedimentology than micropaleontology, they are produced by bacteria (prokaryotic organisms) so we will consider them along with other fossil microbes. The term Stromatolite is defined as an accretionary organosedimentary structure, commonly laminated, megascopic, and calcareous, produced as a result of the growth and metabolic activities of mat-forming, filimentous prokaryotes - primarily cyanobacteria ("blue green algae", which are not algae at all - algae are eukaryotes). Sedimentary particles carried by currents and tides settle out onto the mat surface. Bacterial cells grow upward through the sedimentary material, trapping and binding it, and forming a new mat surface. This process is continuously repeated to produce laminations of sediment bound by older mat material with the living growing microbial mat remaining on the outer surface of the mound. Stromatolites can be stratiform (flat)

Please contact the author for distribution details. There probably will not be a problem anyway, but please ask. Palynology and sequence stratigraphy of Late Albian (latest Early Cretaceous) sediments and volcanics, Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian Arctic. Successfully defended December 4, 1996. This page will soon be moving. I am not sure where, but it will be somewhere in Nova Scotia (.ns.ca), the location of my new, temporary job as a visiting fellow at GSC Atlantic. I will add a pointer to the new page when I have a URL. Not everything will be moving, so get it while you can. Kanguk Peninsula field area. View looking west towards Twin Diapirs (Carboniferous-Permian evaporite diapirs) in the forground, and Split Mountain (to the right) on Kanguk Peninsula, western Axel Heiberg Island, Canadian Arctic. The youngest units visible are the black basalt flows of the Strand Fiord Formation, capping cliffs over 800 metres tall on Split Mountain, about 6km away. These are underlain (in order) by thin black shales of the Bastion Ridge Formation (marine), the Hassel Formation (sandstone, nearshore marine) and Christopher Formation (shale, shelf marine), all Cretaceous in age, and the subjects of the study. In the foreground, around the orange-yellow diapirs, some of the sandstone of the Isachsen Formation is visible. The orange-yellow colour of the diapirs is caused by oxidation of sulphide minerals associated with the diapirs.

Extractions: Archaeological Geology The University of Maine at Orno recently received a grant to study and publicize the origins of early man in the new world. It Center for the Study of Early Man will work with the Institute for Quaternary Studies and will eventually accept graduate students specializing in both anthropology and geology. For more information, write to Robson Bonnichsen (anthropology department), director of the Center. The Cultural Resources Management Program at the University of Pittsburgh is sponsored by the Department of Anthropology, and is directed by James Adovasio and Ronal Carlisle. The program acts as the contractual branch of the Department of Anthropology and works with the geology department. Graduate students may work with Jack Donahue on sedimentological projects or with Harold Rollins on vertebrate paleontology. There is heavy-mineral analysis, x-ray, and petrographic equipment in the geology department; scanning-electron microscope, clay-mineral analysis, palynology, and radiocarbon-dating facilities are available through other universities and institutions. Among major interdisciplinary projects have been the excavations at the Meadowcroft and Tom Bigby rock-shelters. 3 members of the Department of Geology at the University of Delaware, Neward, are involved in coastal-environment projects that have archaeological aspects. John C. Kraft is working on the effects of shoreline changes on habitation patterns along the East Coast, and the coasts of Greece and Turkey. Robert Sheridan uses geophysical techniques to study continental-shelf environments and to detect sunken ships. John Wehmiller is using amino-acid racemiztion methods (with U.S. Geological Survey) to relate ancient Quaternary shorelines to early man. That group and their students work with researchers at the Quaternary Research Center at the University of Washington, in Seattle, and with George Rapp Jr and John Figgord in the Archaeometry Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, in Duluth.

Extractions: GeoRef In Process The GeoRef In Process database contains records that are, literally, in the process of being indexed prior to their integration in the main GeoRef database. The majority of the records originate from non-English language literature that was not necessarily published recently. GeoRef In Process does NOT contain the most current records and should not be confused with a database of Recent References. When the GeoRef indexers complete the editing and indexing of an In Process record, then the record will appear in the next GeoRef monthly update. In Process records may lack a few fields or contain minimal data in some fields. However, most records do contain descriptors (index terms) and because all areas of geoscience are covered in the In Process file, it is recommended that you select both the GeoRef and GeoRef In Process to perform the most comprehensive search.
