In 1850 these consisted of approximately 400,000 Muslims, 75,000 Christians, and 25,000 Jews. For centuries these groups had lived in harmony: 80 percent Muslim, 15 percent Christian, 5 percent Jewish. But then in the late 1800s a group in Europe decided to colonize this land. Known as "Zionists," this group consisted of an extremist minority of the world Jewish population. They wanted to create a Jewish homeland, and at first considered locations in Africa and South America, before finally settling on Palestine for their colony. more maps When the inevitable war broke out the outcome was never in doubt, according to U.S. intelligence reports from the time. The Zionist army consisted of over 90,000 European-trained soldiers and possessed modern weaponry, including up-to-date fighter and bomber airplanes. The Arab forces, very much a third-world army, consisted of approximately 30,000 ill-equipped, poorly trained men. The U.S. Army, British intelligence, and the CIA all agreed: it would be no contest.

Extractions: Home Search About Contact In recent history the area called Palestine includes the territories of present day Israel and Jordan (see map above. For earlier history of the term see article ). From 1517 to 1917 most of this area remained under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Empire was dissolved at the end of World War I. Its successor, modern republic of Turkey, transferred Palestine to British Empire control under the Lausanne agreement that followed WW I. In 1917 Great Britain issued the Balfour Declaration for "the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people". In 1922 Britain allocated nearly 80% of Palestine to Transjordan. Thus, Jordan covers the majority of the land of Palestine under British Mandate. Jordan also includes the majority of the Arabs who lived there. In other words, Jordan is the Arab portion of Palestine. The residents of Palestine are called "Palestinians". Since Palestine includes both modern day Israel and Jordan both Arab and Jewish residents of this area were referred to as "Palestinians".

Extractions: One Land, Two Peoples Cambridge University Press 2004 A book review by Danny Yee With the conflict between Israel and Palestine looming so large, how can a history of modern Palestine avoid the pull of competing nationalist stories? In A History of Modern Palestine Pappe offers a "de-modernized" history, taking a critical approach to some of the assumptions about modernisation that underly nationalism. And he consistently takes the perspective of the underprivileged rather than that of elites. Avoiding narratives that foreground Westernisation and the development of national identities, Pappe emphasizes the persistence of indigenous cultures and traditional customs, and the presence of social and economic links and trends which cut within and across national and ethnic divides. These are strongest early on Pappe starts his account around 1856 but they have continued despite wars and partitions, perhaps even reviving in new form with the return of religion as a major force in both Israeli and Palestinian politics. Pappe focuses on "subaltern society", on the marginalised and dispossessed. As well as women and the poor, he pays relatively more attention to Mizrahi (Arab) Jews and Palestinian Israelis than to the Ashkenazi or Zionist elites, and to Palestinian refugees and farmers than to the Palestinian leadership or the heads of Arab states. Pappe also covers social and economic history, rather than politics narrowly: the machinations of political parties or factions and their leaders are described, but also the sources of their support in the population.
