Extractions: The Dinosaurs of Garden Park The Garden Park Fossil Area has produced some of the finest late Jurassic dinosaur specimens known. This section deals with the species of dinosaurs that have been found in the Fossil Area. The dinosaurs are listed alphabetically by type. Theropods (carnivores) Sauropods (quadripedal plant eaters) Ornithopods (bipedal plant eaters) Armored Dinosaurs (plated plant eaters) The Theropods (carnivores) Meat-eating dinosaurs that were bipedal (walked on their hind legs) with heavy tails that made up almost half their body length for balance. The most common thing we find in the field is their teeth, which are long and slender blades, serrated like steak knives. These were often damaged while they ate (as they are in most modern reptiles) and were constantly replaced throughout their life. Extractions: A Short History of Dinosaur Collecting (cont.) Carpenter (1991-1996) In 1991, Kenneth Carpenter of the Denver Museum of Natural History (now the Denver Museum of Nature and Science) began a detailed study of the Morrison Formation in the Garden Park Fossil Area with a large crew of volunteers from the museum and the newly formed Garden Park Paleontology Society. Discoveries included some of the impressive contents of this exhibit, including this spectacular nearly complete Stegosaurus stenops (the third and most complete from the Fossil Area) the very rare juvenile Othnielis rex, and the vertebra of Camarasaurus supremus (discussed earlier). Extractions: Origin and Historic Development In the 18th and early 19th century the public perception of earth history and biology was based on the typological-registration inventory of natural history objects then currently in vogue. These objects became known and were collected during the geographical exploration of the world during the times of Columbus, Vasco da Gama, James Cook, and others. In medieval times, natural objects were already being kept in galleries or collections that did not distinguish between natural objects and artifacts. During Renaissance time, these accumulated objects were kept in the so-called "art and wonder cabinets" and they served the continuing acquisition of knowledge in regard to the micro- and macro cosmos. Some objects from these collections were compared with their likes in a kind of playful association, and thus knowledge was gained about those deviating from the normal. It follows that each museum and each collection developed its own organization and depending on its individual history and on the time and circumstances of its founding (Ziegler, 1995, p.50). Thus, museums and collections are conditioned in their aims, their appearance; their sense of priority, their respective histories and by the local factors of the country in which they were established (Hudson, 1987, p. 83). These facts have to be taken into account in judging the future work of natural history museums, and it is hoped that they will resist any attempts at concentration, fusion or leveling.

These specimens may exist in the field, but much of our knowledge of them is with reference to material held in museum collections. Since the collections of individual researchers are ephemeral, museums and research institutions serve as the ultimate repositories for our documentation of the history of life, in addition to their role documenting past discoveries and as reference for future studies. The second key theme is that museums provide the intersection between the general public and fossils. Extractions: The Paleontology Museum named after Yuri Orlov is reckoned among the world largest natural-science museums. It originates from the Kunstkammer ("curiosity chamber") established by Peter the Great in Saint Petersburg. The Kunstkammer's collection was comprised of all kind of rarities including teeth and bones of ancient creatures found in different parts of the worlds. Later such exhibits were kept at the Academy of Science and then were given over to the Geological Museum. The Museum's permanent exhibition dedicated to the process of evolution on the Earth is housed in the unique museum complex that has no analogs in the world. The project was developed specially for the museum: for more than twenty years leading architects, engineers, designers and animal painters worked on the building design. The red brick building reminds of the old fortress with central inner yard, around which there are four exposition zones with four adjoined towers. The First Hall is rather introductory one and tells about the paleontology as a science. The exposition of the Second Hall tells about Precambrian and early Paleozoic and represents the first forms of life that appeared on Earth, invertebrate species and their evolution. The Forth Hall is dedicated to late Paleozoic and the beginning of the Age of Reptiles.
