Among the Paleozoic plants, the Pennsylvania-aged collections are particularly significant, especially the Cannelton/Mansfield, Lacoe, and Oleksyshyn collections. Tertiary holdings include collections made by invertebrate and vertebrate paleontologists from localities previously unknown to paleobotanists and the excellent and large collections of Green River flora. Our collections from Monte Bolca, Italy, are the largest in the country and are of great value for study and exhibit. Most paleobotanical research involves the study of variously-preserved larger plant fossils, including wood, leaves, cones, flowers, seeds, etc. Palynology is a specialized field within paleobotany, dedicated to the study of microscopic plant remains, including spores and pollen grains. Palynology is an important tool in oil exploration, where both the age of specific rock layers and the environment of deposition can be determined using the palynomorphs preserved in the rocks. Palynology is also valuable for the reconstruction of ancient ecosystems. Paleoecology involves the reconstruction of various aspects of ancient ecosystems. Since plants are the defining elements in most terrestrial communities, paleobotanical and palynological research provides a means to reconstruct the major components of terrestrial ecosystems. Such studies can include the composition and distribution of various community elements; the prevailing climate with respect to temperature and rainfall; and patterns of vegetation dynamics (succession) in response to factors such as climatic change, volcanism, fire, and hydrologic disturbance. Reconstruction of the plant components of ancient ecosystems provides a basis for defining the nature of the interactions between plants and the animals present in ancient communities.

As any evolutionary biologist or ecologist knows from experience, the organisms most successfully adapted to a given environment will generally perceive any form of rapid change as decay of the environment and decreasing fitness. This is the famous Red Queen hypothesis, after a fictional character who must run as fast as she can just to stay in place. It seems probable that future historians of science will view the end of this century as a period of extremely rapid change. It is not surprising, then, to read in society newsletters and hear at meetings wails of distress over the "poor state of (insert your field of research here)". This view, which seems to be especially common within older fields of science, is a reflection of the even more famous hypothesis that The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side, together with a corollary of the Red Queen hypothesis, that Things Used to Be Better. The paleobotanical community is primarily academic in composition and thus relies on the initiative of individual investigators and research teams. The Paleobotanical Section of the Botanical Society of America will take responsibility for this agenda by working to implement the goals and priorities presented. Implicit in this research agenda is the assumption that graduate students in paleobotany have a broad training in areas such as phylogenetic theory, molecular systematics, morphology and anatomy, and paleobotany. Likewise, paleoecological investigators must have been trained not only in paleobotany, taxonomy, sedimentology (depositional environments), and biostratigraphy, but also in ecology, population biology, biogeography, and climatology. The largest holding in the collection is the Hoskins Collection of 25,000 fossil plant specimens from North America and around the world.
