Why, how or when people arrived on our beautiful islands is unknown, but studies indicate that today's Palauans are distant relatives of the Malays of Indonesia, Melanesians of New Guinea and Polynesians. As for the date of their arrivals, carbon dating of artifacts from the oldest known village sites on the Rock Islands and the spectacular terraces on Babeldaob place civilization here as early as 1,000 BC. The most noteworthy first foreign contact took place in 1783 when the vessel Antelope, under the command of English Captain Henry Wilson, was shipwrecked on a reef near Ulong, a Rock Island located between Koror and Peleliu. With the assistance of Koror's High Chief Ibedul, Wilson and his men stayed for three months to rebuild his ship. From that time onward, many foreign explorers called on Palau, and the islands were exposed to further European contact. Foreign governance of our islands officially began when Pope Leo XIII asserted Spain's rights over the Caroline Islands in 1885. Two churches were established and maintained by two Capuchin priests and two brothers, resulting in the introduction of the Roman alphabet and the elimination of inter-village wars. In 1899, Spain sold the Carolines to Germany, which established an organized program to exploit the islands' natural resources.

General Info Accommodation Diving Getting There Prices Destination Map Oceania Menu Palau is part of the Micronesia Island chain and is located just 7o north of the Equator - giving it some of the most favourable tropical weather on earth. In 1783, enroute to China, British Captain Henry Wison ran aground in his ship Antelope off the shores of Ulong Island and hence began Palau's contact with the 'outside world'. There were no records prior to Wilson's accidental visit so it was not clear how long the islands had been inhabited - recent carbon dating has given estimates of over 3 millenium. Detailed studies of language and culture have detected influences from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Guinea. The Spanish took control of Palau in 1885 and the islands were bought by Germany in 1899 before being passed on to Japan under the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. Although these external influences reflect the multifaceted aspect of Palau's culture, there remains a laid-back air of unspoilt paradise about the place. Today, Palau benefits from generous grants as Japan and America try to out do each other in the conservation stakes - a win win situation for the future preservation of the reefs of Palau. Palauan culture revolves around matrilineal clans (no wonder it is such a relaxed and easy place to be!). A council of chiefs was responsible for the governing of a village whilst a parallel concil of women held an advisory role, in control of land, money and the selction of the chiefs themselves. Disputes between clans were settled with 'war' which only continued until the first man died whereby victory was claimed and the trophy head was displayed outside the winning village as a future deterent.

The race for money, prestige and power, the main thrust of which used to be for political power within a clan or village, was the focus from which most events occurred, such as sports competitions and wars. Palauan villages were, and still are, organized around 10 clans reckoned matrilineally. A council of chiefs from the 10 ranking clans governed the village, and a parallel council of their female counterparts held a significant advisory role in the control and division of land and money. Men and women had strictly defined roles to play in the continuity of the village. The sea was the domain of men who braved its fury to harvest the fish necessary to sustain the village and wage battle. Inter-village wars were common, so men spent a lot of time in the men's meeting houses mastering techniques of canoe building and refining their skills with weapons. Women, on the other hand, held sway in the home. They cultivated vegetables and harvested shellfish and sea cucumbers from the shallow reefs. Until the late 1800s Palauans were tattooed, with more ornate designs on women of high clan. Men wore their hair in tight buns and rubak, the important chiefs, wore bracelets made from the vertebrae of dugongs.

The Republic of Belau (as it is called by its residents) is actually a chain of 300-plus islands stretching across 400 miles southwest of Micronesia. The largest, Babeldaob, is mostly jungle, with hiking trails, wildlife ranging from cockatoos to crocodiles, a scattering of traditional villages, and an international airport. Just to the south, the capital of Koror is the commercial hub, complete with white-sand beaches, a scattering of resorts, sportfishing charters, and an interesting cultural museum. But the real jewels in this aquatic chain are the Rock Islands, which from the air look like patches of jungle green floating in a vast turquoise lagoon protected by a barrier reef. The diving is nothing less than phenomenal and best of all, much of the action (including WWII wreck) is in water shallow enough for snorkeling.
