Extractions: Princess Uroi-Salii studies in the United States but she comes home whenever her mother needs her to participate in the traditional ceremonies of their clan. I usually tell my friends that the women are the ones who are in charge of some things getting done. I started dancing when I was four, around four or five, started learning with my mom and when the older women were dancing the women's dance, the Lalangloy , that's the mother dance. That dance is from the spirits, or the ancestors who passed away. And it's passing on the words from the spirits down to the family who are still alive. And some of the words, we don't understand, but, it's because the spirits or ancestors, it's their language, but yet it sounds really nice to hear. It gives you goose bumps when you hear the words. The women who were dancing, all have different colors for the skirts, which represents each clan. The colors were given away long ago, so that's how we differentiate each clan. The colors of my clan are black, yellow, and red. Those are the colors of my mom's clan. My position as Queen Bilung's daughter is to be part of the traditions such as dancing, and passing it on to younger generations.

Pacific News member of Micronesia (Palau) Culture The people of Belau, as the islanders call their homeland, may appear to be among the most Westernized of all Micronesians in their casual American togs and baseball caps. However, they still frown upon skimpy beach attire away from the water, and most homes and many public buildings require that you leave your shoes near the door. Furthermore, many traditional rites have been retained over the years, such as those for a first-born child, and village chiefs still command an important role in the social hierarchy. Most Palauans are Christian, with the Catholic and Protestant churches well established and Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh-Day Adventists and Bahais gaining in membership. Modekngei is a revived form of the indigenous religion, which also shows up in traditions such as leaving a light on to ward off spooks. Staples of the traditional Palauan diet include coconut milk and meat (copra), cassava (tapioca), sweet potatoes and all sorts of fish and seafood. Japanese and American mealtime influences are common. Although not as prevalent as it is on Yap, many Palauans chew betel nut, which when mixed with lime powder produces copious amounts of bright red spit. Old-time chewers are noted by their red teeth, newcomers by the stains on their chins and shirts.

The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally. Belmar is hoping to get other schools linked up to the programme in areas of sustainable development. By 2004 the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States is scheduled to be reviewed. Belmar's attendance at Palau went some way to broadening St. Vincent and the Grenadines' participation in this exercise.

It is not only a chronicle of the intimate life of Pablo Picasso, but also a profound penetration into the psychology of the artist. The book demonstrates the close friendship between Pablo Picasso and Josep Palau i Fabre. The thirty-five works which Picasso dedicated to him and which also appear in the book further attest to this bond. Most recently, Palau i Fabre has published

Extractions: Legends of Palau Author Nancy Barbour has spent the last 12 years traveling and writing about Palau. Part of that time was spent researching not only Palau's unique coral reefs and marine life, but also the culture and history of the Palauan people. Intrigued by the nation's rich cultural traditions, Barbour focused her attentions on the Palauans' ancient art of storytelling which reveals the complexities of their society and strong sense of familial ties. Oral traditions, passed down through the form of chants, stories, dances, and legends, have kept Palau's history alive. The following excerpts and legends are taken from Barbour's book, Palau . It is her ultimate hope that her book will contribute to an appreciation of Palau and its people, and that, as a result, it will help ensure that Palau remains the unspoiled natural wonder it is today. Culture Check back soon for ordering information. Though the origin of the Palauan people is shrouded in folklore and legend, the most accepted theory, based on linguistic similarities, holds that the islands were settled thousands of years ago by people migrating from Southeast Asia and Indonesia people who thought nothing of sailing hundreds of miles across uncharted seas in open outrigger canoes. The early Palauans were perhaps once gifted navigators, but when they got to Palau they stayed. With an abundance of food from the fertile land and surrounding reef, there was no need to explore beyond the their shores. Long distance navigation skills diminished. Instead, the men became great fishermen and new more about the seasonal rhythms and life cycles of fish than is known by Western scientists today. While the sea was essentially the men's domain, farming the land was where the women excelled, primarily growing taro, a staple food with tuberous roots that are cooked in a variety of ways. The labor of the women guaranteed an adequate supply of food year round and thus gave them high social and political importance in the community.

Several of the traditional ceremonies, such as the omersurch birth ceremony, ocheraol first-house ceremony and the kemeldiil funeral services are widely practiced and the codes and beliefs adopted by Palauan forefathers are still revered today. Probably the most noticeable aspect of Palauan culture is the people's connection with the sea. Traditionally, it was the duty of the family to go to sea to harvest fish and battle against enemy villages. As the sea was the source of their livelihood, men developed a close relationship with the waters of Palau, becoming versant in the currents and the phases of the moon and the behavior of the fish they sought to put on the table. Women generally stayed on land or along the shallow reefs surrounding the islands, rather than combat the open ocean, providing foundation for the family. Their days were largely spent tending to their homes, family and fields where they grew taro. Palauan villages were, and still are, organized around 10 clans reckoned matrilineally. A council of chiefs from the 10 ranking clans governed the village, and a parallel council of their female counterparts held a significant advisory role in the division and control of land and money.
