When the fans are on, the ozone is put in the air plenum down stream from the fans. Russet Burbank seed known to have Silver Scurf was put in nine 200-lb test bins in late December. All bins were furnished with air at 99% plus relative humidity and at 45 F to 47 F. Three of the bins received no ozone. Three bins received ozone at optimum concentration (1 PPM) for storage. The remaining three bins received ozone at a very high concentration (2.5 PPM plus) to determine if ozone could cause potato damage. The potatoes were removed from the bins and graded by University of Idaho personnel in May. It was found that nearly every potato in the bins without ozone was heavily infected with Silver Scurf. There were no new Silver Scurf lesions on the potatoes in the bins that were treated with ozone. See figures below. There was no observed damage to the potatoes in the bins with an ozone concentration for storage.
