Administrators with analyst privilege can diagnose server problems by tracing server activity. Any administrator with general privilege can display information about trace activities. You can trace ADSM events by initiating trace functions from the server console, or by putting the trace commands in the server options file. Putting trace commands in the server options file is the only way to trace functions as the server is coming up. Trace output is sent to the server console or to a file that you specified with the TRACE BEGIN command. Tracing is achieved by enabling and disabling trace classes. Each trace class produces diagnostic messages for a functional area of the server. Some trace classes generate extremely large amounts of data, while others produce relatively small amounts.
