HAVANA, Cuba (AP) Regaled by Greek hymns and bouquets of roses, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I was greeted by President Fidel Castro as he arrived in Cuba Wednesday night and became the first Christian Orthodox patriarch to visit Latin America. Dressed in his traditional black robes and cap and carrying his patriarchal staff, the spiritual leader of the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians was also greeted by scores of faithful from around the region when he arrived after the long flight from Istanbul. Castro, wearing his olive green uniform and cap, greeted the patriarch at the bottom of the plane's steps. Together they walked down a red carpet, greeting diplomats, Cuban officials, local Orthodox Christian leaders and representatives of Cuba's Roman Catholic and Protestant churches.

Extractions: Orthodox worship is different! Some of these differences are apparent, if perplexing, from the first moment you walk in a church. Others become noticeable only over time. Here is some information that may help you feel more at home in Orthodox worshiptwelve things I wish I'd known before my first visit to an Orthodox church. 1. What's all this commotion? During the early part of the service the church may seem to be in a hubbub, with people walking up to the front of the church, praying in front of the iconostasis (the standing icons in front of the altar), kissing things and lighting candles, even though the service is already going on. In fact, when you came in the service was already going on, although the sign outside clearly said "Divine Liturgy, 9:30." You felt embarrassed to apparently be late, but these people are even later, and they're walking all around inside the church. What's going on here? In an Orthodox church there is only one Eucharistic service (Divine Liturgy) per Sunday, and it is preceded by an hour-long service of Matins (or Orthros) and several short preparatory services before that. There is no break between these servicesone begins as soon as the previous ends, and posted starting times are just educated guesses. Altogether, the priest will be at the altar on Sunday morning for over three hours, "standing in the flame," as one Orthodox priest put it.

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." Psalms 90:1-2 EOTC DIRECTORY EOTC ICONS ARCHIVE MAIN DOCTRINES THE SACRAMENTS ... CREED Ethiopia was well known to the ancient writers. It is mentioned in the Bible more than 38 times by both Old Testament and New Testament writers. So, in accordance with the Biblical traditions of the ancient Israel, Ethiopia is described as the land of "CUSH" which was located by the "RIVER NILE" (Gen. 2: 13) . The Septuagint (The Greek Translation) also describes it after the name of "ETHIOPIA" which has the same location. Apart from the Biblical traditions, many historians knew Ethiopia and described its geographical location, referring towards the south of Egypt, which was populated by both Hamitic and Semitic stocks of people. According to the ancient Egyptian tradition, it was known as the "LAND OF PUNT" located at the end of the World, and they said "Land of Ghost. " Homer (Greek poet of the 8th century B.C.) knew of this historical land and its people, when he said "ETHIOPIA, THE LAND OF SUN BURNED FACE." He described inhabitants again, as "THE BLAMELESS RACE."
