Extractions: School-Based Tobacco Use Prevention Programs MMWR Highlights August 10, 2001 / Vol. 50 / No. 31 Highlights Use and Efficacy of Comprehensive School-Based Programs Information Highlights The Oregon Health Division found that between spring 1999 and spring 2000, smoking rates among eighth graders declined by 21.7 percent (from 16.6 to 13 percent) in a self-selected sample of schools funded to implement school tobacco prevention guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). By comparison, smoking rates declined by 7.6 percent (from 17 to 15.7 percent) in a comparison group of non-funded schools. Among the funded schools in the Oregon study, a strong dose-response effect was observed between how fully schools implemented CDCs guidelines and how much smoking rates declined. Between 1999 and 2000 rates declined by 42.2 percent (from 14.2 to 8.2 percent) in schools with the highest implementation scores, 21.9 percent (from 17.8 to 13.9 percent) in schools with middle scores, and 6.6 percent (from 17.1 to 15.6 percent) in schools with the lowest scores.

The library has an open computer mini-lab available for drop-in student use in the mornings. A separate PC lab is used for weekly technology lessons. Each classroom has at least one PC and Macintosh. The library is always open and welcomes drop-ins anytime. Children may trade books any day, any time. Scheduled each week are library classes of 30 minutes for each class in kindergarten and 30 minutes for first and second grade. 45 minutes for each class in third through fifth grade. The librarian, Mrs. Campbell, is assisted by Mrs. Ward. Friendly service to students, staff and parents is our highest priority. Parents are encouraged to tell Mrs. Campbell of special needs, such as a child who needs extra assistance in choosing books at the correct reading level or helping an inquisitive child pursue special interests. Electronic magazine and newspaper indexing as well as numerous other databases are available online via OSLIS on all networked computers at PHS. We also have the print version of Readers' Guide available. We store magazines for 3 years, currently 1998 - present. Many of the magazines indexed in the databases are available in full text. If we subscribe to a given magazine, students are asked either to take notes on the article here or have the article photocopied at the circulation desk; if the issue is missing from our collection and is available full text, the student may print it out. If our library does not subscribe to the magazine containing the article needed, the student may print it out if it is available full text. However, students are asked to be selective and not print long articles in their entirety. We can also request copies of articles from other libraries when necessary. We have several electronic encyclopedias and other references available on CD-ROM for both Mac and PC computers. They are listed by the computers and must be requested and signed for at the circulation desk.

Extractions: Special Education is like many areas of work and specialization - it has developed its own list of initials and acronyms over the years. These initials are like shorthand; they can speed up communication when everyone knows them. But, at the same time, the use of this shorthand can shut out people who don't know it. This Code Book for Abbreviations and Acronyms Commonly Used in Special Education will help you in the communication maze. Review it before a meeting so you can unravel the code. Use it after a meeting to clarify what you heard. Keep it with you during a meeting so you can decode the terms used. Better yet, when you don't know what a word, terms, or abbreviation means, ask the person near you or the person who used it. There is nothing wrong with asking for clarification. And we all need to be reminded to use terms and words that everyone can understand. Special education is about helping, not confusing. You may hear terms that are not in this booklet. Use the blank pages to write down these words and their meanings. The booklet has extra pages in the back for your own notes and words. Please contact the Office of Special Education when you find a word that you think should be on the list. Remember that IDEA is about kids! And we're all working together for the benefit of all kids.
