There are documents from a number of countries. There are also links to articles in professional journals and newspapers that are based on these documents. This page is intended to help school librarians to answer the question, "Do school libraries make a difference?". School Libraries Work! This is a Research Foundation Paper published by Scholastic Library Publishing; it brings together research findings from almost ten years of school library-related research. The preface notes, "A substantial body of research since 1990 clearly demonstrates the importance of school libraries to students' education. Whether student achievement is measured by standardized reading achievement tests or by global assessments of learning, research shows that a well-stocked library staffed by a certified library media specialist has a positive impact on student achievement, regardless of the socio-economic or educational levels of the community." Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries The OELMA web site has the report of the "Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries" project carried out by Dr Ross Todd and Dr Carol Kuhlthau. Also available on the web site are a short PowerPoint presentation of the findings of this research project, the report itself as a downloadable PDF file, a fact sheet on the project, and a link to an article about the project in the February 2004 issue of

This was Joan's second arrest that week. The courts revoked her conditional release due to her "repeat defender" status. There have been 48 arrests since logging began in Old-Growth reserves on March 7th; Joan Norman is the only activist to remain behind bars. Norman will not post bail as a matter of principle.

Extractions: Volume I, Number 8, August, 2003 NCLB: AKA "Helter-Skelter?" By Jamie McKenzie ( about author Note: This article first appeared online in June, 2003 at KQWeb No previous action by the federal government has posed a graver threat to schools, children, teachers and librarians than the current ESEA law and its regulations, disingenuously labeled "No Child Left Behind" by clever promoters. Given its radical experimentation and risky, unproven change strategies, NCLB should instead be named "Helter-Skelter." Sadly, media specialists must play by NCLB rules even as they seek to convince their congressional representatives that the law must be radically amended or repealed. A school that ignores the demands of NCLB will face an awesome array of consequences. NCLB is the educational equivalent of "Shock and Awe." As long as the law creates a punitive system with inadequate funding and only token gestures toward capacity building, media specialists must rise to the challenge of helping their schools face NCLB. Among other things, they must help to create test results to safeguard them from the damaging sanctions and choice provisions embedded in the law and its recently published regulations.
