How can schools expand curriculum offerings and prepare students for a global workforce where they will need to communicate and work with people from different cultural and economic backgrounds? One promising model is COOLSchool . Interested in ways to harness emerging Internet technologies to improve students' educational access and opportunities, Eugene School District 4J field-tested its Internet-based COOLSchool during the 1995/1996 school year and now offers 42 COOLSchool classes to high school students throughout Oregon and around the world. Corvallis Online, in collaboration with OSU K-12 Online, seeks to provide students with online learning opportunities as an alternative to the traditional school program and to earn Corvallis School District credit. The goal is to allow students flexibility in their learning environment and to provide the option of extending their school day beyond regular school hours and the classroom setting. Courses are taught by certified teachers and built around state content standards. Each course is designed to engage students in their learning through meaningful and relevant curriculum. Teachers provide students with instructional support and feedback to meet their individual needs through the use of email, telephone, or face-to-face conferencing if necessary. Contact us at

Students involved in StRUT evaluate, repair, and refurbish donated computers and, in turn, place those computers into the public schools in their area. In August of 2003, as funding for public education reached an all time low, NWRESD announced that it would no longer be able to provide coordination for the statewide StRUT program. This unfortunate news would surely have a significant impact on K-12 schools within Oregon. For the first time in eight years, schools would no longer have an opportunity to pick up computers from the StRUT warehouse, nor would they have the option to use StRUT for their e-waste recycling. In May of 2003, as the future funding for StRUT looked unlikely, Rick Wahlstrom, executive technology director of NWRESD, e-mailed all Oregon StRUT teachers and addressed the potential side effe
