Extractions: Digital teaching and learning are certainly not new to everyone. During our year of discussions we learned from experts in the field who visited Wellesley or made their writings available to us. We learned that, while digital technology offers, at best, a nascent mode of delivering education, there are inspiring success stories. Yet inspiring advances in pedagogy and access to education are enabled by digital technology. The best practices to date set out to enhance the higher education experience, rather than to replace its current modes and structures, as we heard from expert after expert. The prÈcis that follows offers highlights from the insights they shared with us. Targets As Dean Georgia Nugent of Princeton University suggested to our committee, technology should always be easy to use. Second, it should allow us to present new, previously unimagined insights or perspectives. In Nugent's parlance, an online method is worthwhile if it "adds magic." Third, digital teaching and learning tools should challenge the imagination by engaging multiple senses: for example, "juxtaposing nano-technology and the galaxies." "Consider carefully what it is that your institution wants to be. How will you use digital technology to improve your offerings?"

INTRODUCTION This may seem a strange way to begin, but I want to admit that my ever-emerging philosophy of education increasingly diminishes the role of "the teacher" in the teaching/learning equation. It took over 30 years of college teaching experience for me to realize that the learner is, for the most part, in charge of what gets learned. Implementing this point of view online has, for me, blurred, somewhat, the distinction between effective teaching and pedagogically sound instructional design I hope some of the ideas that follow are helpful to others. I have liberally interspersed snippets from several of my current online courses throughout this essay. Because screen shots can be hard to read, I have also provided links to the actual courses whenever possible. When no link is available, it's because the course is password protected. Extractions: OII's Entry for the NII Awards OII in 25 words... OII is a grassroots national telecollaboration effort to help people place themselves at the center of their own learning, within a vibrant online community. Summary Description The Online Internet Institute ( OII ) is an emerging paradigm for ongoing collaborative professional growth. Created by classroom educators and supported by proponents of education reform, the Online Internet Institute demonstrates the network's power to help change the way people teach and learn. The OII is an expanding virtual community of practioners and others who care about reinventing teaching and learning, by reflecting on our teaching practices, supporting our peers, and fostering a knowledge-building learning environment. Since our beginning in June of 1995, OII has helped 1130 participants invest more than 18,800 hours in their own professional growth. Background OII started from a conversation between Ferdi Serim and Bonnie Bracey, who were reflecting on the difficulty educators face in learning to use the Internet. They thought that creating a "place" on the Internet where the Internet ethos (share what you know, help who you can as others have helped you) could nurture anyone who wanted to discover how the Internet could support lifelong learning would be very powerful and effective. On January 18, 1995, a single message was sent to 20 luminaries in the field of educational networking asking if they'd serve as advisors as we developed the project. Every single person said "No! We don't want to advise, we want to *do* the project!". Most of these folks were usually competitors on big grants, and rarely had the opportunity to collaborate. We had no money, no organization, we were just two teachers with an idea.

Extractions: Summing up : 6 - 7 September 2001 A major concern among academic officials has often focused on the quality of educational experiences within an online class. Carnevale (2000) relates that research studies indicate that the essential features of a good course include interaction between instructors and students, a student-centered approach and built-in opportunities for students to learn on their own (p. A46). Creating and sustaining a quality online degree program is a challenging venture. There are a variety of factors that can have either a positive or negative impact on the online educational setting: the degree of administrative financial support,

Number 2 Anna Turula (Poland) Much of current language teaching methodology seems to be oriented predominantly toward young learners. This appears a little lopsided as it has long been known that, in spite of the unrivalled linguistic abilities of the young, success in foreign languages is possible in adult life. In this article, I look at the special characteristics and needs of the adult foreign language learner, but not in the context of teaching methods, techniques, and materials. I want to concentrate on the quality of the learning environment, which includes everything from the premises where a class is taught to the whole range of interactions between class participants. Of course, not all adult learners become paralyzed by negative feelings the moment they enter a language classroom. However, every teacher who has taught a group of grown-ups knows that some individuals may be reluctant to speak, especially when they realize or assume that other students are more fluent. I am not suggesting these feelings are alien to younger learners, however, I believe that with age the tension and anxiety associated with learning a new language become stronger and more difficult to overcome.

This paper addresses the role that librarians have played in transforming undergraduate courses, pedagogy, facilities design, and faculty development to bring information literacy into departmental curricula. As research and teaching increasingly rely on global networks for the creation, storage and dissemination of knowledge, the need to educate information-literate students has become more widely recognized. Students often lack the skills necessary to succeed in this rapidly changing environment, and faculty need training and support to make use of new technologies for effective teaching and learning. The current environment provides an opportunity for librarians to play a key role in the evolution of an integrated information literacy curriculum, in contrast to past efforts which were sporadic and rarely programmatically based.

Creating Learner-Centered Middle School Classrooms Learner-centered teaching strategies are those that focus instruction on the needs, preferences, and interests of the learner. Teachers act as facilitators of the learning process, providing direction and feedback rather than just instruction. Learning activities emphasize cognitive processes that prompt learners to construct new meanings from the information they acquire. Students are given multiple opportunities to discover knowledge and practice skills in an environment designed to appeal to them. Creating a Learner-Centered Classroom To create a classroom that is learner-centered, teachers must incorporate lessons that are age-appropriate and relevant to student needs and interests. Connecting life experiences to learning is a critical step in creating an engaging educational experience. Students become skilled at thinking purposefully as they are provided with connections to real-world experiences. Learner-centered activities often include student-produced products that demonstrate the results of their learning.
