Those with a cynical attitude towards the Greeks and their laid-back attitudes about life believe that it is impossible and the Olympics in Athens will be a disaster if they even materialize. They point to the chaos of modern Athens and what they describe as Byzantine politics and an Olympic commitee whose main agenda seemed to be the drapes in their offices instead of construction that was falling dangerously behind schedule. Some point to Salt Lake City and the scandals there and say "If the religious state of Utah can be corrupted by the money that the winter Olympics can bring in, what about Greece, where large sums of EEC money for social and infrastructure improvements end up in Swiss bank accounts and polititians and officials first order of business is to make sure they are financially secure before they worry about the needs of their constituents." But I believe the Olympics can be pulled off because I think the country is changing. I think the Greek attitude towards corruption and incompetance is being altered by the scrutiny Greece is receiving because of incidents in the last couple years. The anti-NATO demonstrations, the Clinton Riots and the sinking of the ferry boat Samina have made many Greeks realize that a handfull of idiots are making the whole country look like jerks. Because of this the Greeks are determined to pull off these Olympics and prove to the world and themselves that they are not one step away from being Third World, but they are a serious partner of the larger countries who are forging the future. They completed the Metro (almost), and even if they did forget to put in air-conditioning they have proven that some things can get (almost)done in Greece.

Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them in the 4th century AD, and they did not occur again until they were reinstated in Athens in 1896. Originally, the Olympics was confined to running, but by the 15th Olympiad, additional sports were added the pentathlon (five different events), boxing, wrestling, chariot racing, as well as a variety of foot races of varying lengths, including a long-distance race of about 2.5 miles.

The word athlete is a Greek word and connected with the words athlos , a contest for a prize, and athlon , a prize. An athlete is thus a person who competes for a prize. Origin of the Games Despite the attribution of the games to such legendary heroes as Pelops and Heracles, the consensus of opinion in antiquity was that the first Olympics began in 776BC. They were held in honour of Zeus of Olympia and were thus a religious festival, unlike the modern Olympics. As Zeus was the king of the gods, so were his games the most prestigious of the four great Panhellenic Games (Olympian, Pythian, Isthmian and Nemean). These games originally linked to the religious festivals of the cult of Zeus, were dedicated to the Olympian Gods. The games were held in Olympia located in the western part of the Peloponnese, 145 km west of Athens, Greece, and comprised of only a few events where any male youngster from the various cities of Greece could participate to show off their physical qualities. Olympia the ancient city of worship with its magnificent and elaborate shrines had a stadium which could accommodate 40,000 spectators. The games were first held here in 776 BC and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. Corebus , a cook from Elis is known as the very first Olympic champion in history by winning a run of approximately 192 metres. Stadion running, discus and Javelin were some of the early athletic events of that era. The victors received their first award of a palm branch from a Hellanodikis (Greek judge) soon after the competitions. The official award ceremony were held on the last day at the venue of the temple of Zeus and after announcing the winners, they were awarded with the sacred olive tree wreath (Kotinos) placed on their heads. Red ribbons were tied on the winners head and hands as a mark of victory. But in 393 CE, the ancient Olympic games came to a halt when the Roman emperor Theodosius I, abolished the Games.

The Spondophori.The Olympic Heralds. Select official citizens of the region of Elis, accompanied by a brilliant retinue of the nobility of Elis, set out for all directions of the land, to proclaim that the rituals for the ceremonials of the Olympic Games were starting. They were called "Spondophori" and they proclaimed the Games, that is to say they announced them. They arrived at the City States as official representatives of the region of Elis, while the nobles of the Cities received them with honours and accepted the proclamation.
