Extractions: Geography Oklahoma, one of the Great Plains states, is slightly south of the geographic center of the U.S. Most of the state is a great, rolling plain, sloping gently from northwest to southeast. Highest elevation is 4,973 feet above sea level at the Black Mesa in the northwestern corner of the area known as the Panhandle; lowest, 287 feet, is near Idabel in the extreme southeast. Approximately 24% of the states total area is forested, principally the region bordering Missouri and Arkansas. Although part of the Great Plains, Oklahoma has four mountain ranges: the Ouachita in the southeast, the Ozark Plateau in the northeast, the Arbuckle in the south central part of the state, and the Wichita in the southwest. Throughout the northwest and the Panhandle are sudden outcrops of sandstone and gypsum, sharp ravines and stark hills. In the north central region are several salt flats. Largest is the Great Salt Plains, covering about 25 miles near Cherokee. The states major rivers are the Arkansas and the Red; the Red River forms the states southern boundary with Texas. Other large streams, all flowing into either the Arkansas or the Red, are the Illinois, Grand (or Neosho), Verdigris, Poteau, Canadian, Cimarron, Salt Fork of the Arkansas, and the Washita. On most of the larger rivers, great lakes ranging in size from 890 acres to over 102,500 acres, have been impounded. Largest of more than 60 such reservoirs are Eufaula, Texoma, Grand Lake O the Cherokees, Fort Gibson, Oologah, Kerr, Pine Creek, Broken Bow, Tenkiller, Hudson, Keystone, Foss, Fort Cobb and Great Salt Plains.

Extractions: No man is exempt from saying silly things; the mischief is to say them deliberately. Montaigne Defaming public education has become a national sport for a handful of cranks whose agendas range from closing public schools to tapping the money for personal gain. The critics can't be confronted unless their motives are known. They generally fall into three categories: First, the hierarchy of the Catholic Church wants taxpayers to fund parochial schools. Period. According to Dr. Henry Levin's pioneering study at Stanford, that would suck $33 billion out of public school funds the first year. Second is the religious right, a polyglot group of religious fanatics who swear public schools are teaching a religion called secular humanism. They want to fund home schooling and "Christian" schools with public school dollars although public education already is the ninth most poorly funded among the industrial nations of the world. Daily Oklahoman Public education is far from perfect, but the virulent propaganda being used to defame it by this venomous crew is beneath contempt. Here are some the allegations, followed by the truth:

Extractions: America Says No To Vouchers Most Americans love and support public education, a fact that is driving rightwingers to despair. From Education Secretary Rod Paige and William Bennett to Rush Limbaugh and "Doctor" Laura, a new Gallup Poll knocks down their false, relentless, malicious attack on public schools and public educators. Americans give record high grades to the public schools, and they don't want tax money used to underwrite private and parochial schools. These are among the major findings in the 33rd Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools. The schools have an all-time high public approval rating. The 51% assigning an A or B to schools marks the first time a majority of the public has given grades this high. The 51% is an increase of 11% since 1990 and is a fitting close to a decade in which public school approval ratings climbed steadily despite what might reasonably be described as less than favorable media coverage. Support among parents who have children in public schools jumped even higher, with 68% giving As and Bs to schools attended by their oldest child. Support for the use of public funds for parents and students to use in attending private and church-related schools is only 34%. Some polls have it as low as 22%.
