Extractions: Located near the center of the Alva campus, the J. W. Martin Library houses more than one million books, bound journals, government publications, and microfilm items. Complementing these holdings are more than 500 print journal/periodical subscriptions. An online catalog and online databases facilitate quick, efficient access to library materials. Professional librarians, paraprofessionals, and part-time student assistants are available to help students during the hours the library is open each week. Library hours are also posted at the front entrance. The library is closed when the university is not in session. Once enrolled, students can receive an ID card from Student Services. The ID card must be presented each time a loan is made from the library. Students are responsible for all material borrowed on their ID card. Students may renew their loans online or at the library. Fines are assessed for overdue books and if unpaid will lead to a hold on future enrollment and transcripts.

Extractions: The Oklahoma Territorial Museum through artifacts, photographs and paintings tells the story of the determined people who laid the foundation for the future state of Oklahoma. On the museum grounds stands the Carnegie Library where the first state governor was sworn in. Preserved by the Oklahoma Historical Society, this building, as well as the museum, serve as a visible link between Oklahomas turbulent territorial period and the present. Oklahoma Territory In 1889, Congress opened for settlement nearly 2 million acres of former Indian land located in Central Oklahoma. At noon April 22, 1889, the date of the opening, thousands of hopeful landowners rushed in from the border to stake a claim. At the end of that first day, laws were being established in the cities of Guthrie, Stillwater, Norman and Oklahoma City . A homesteaders first task was the construction of a suitable home. The typical post-run farm dwelling was usually a soddy, constructed from bricks of prairie sod, or a dugout built into the side of a hill. The homesteader next turned his attention to the planting of crops. The run had taken place too late in the season for a cash crop to be planted, so the new arrivals grew vegetables which they hoped would see them through the winter. The following seasons brought only hard times in the form of drought and depression. It was not until 1897, that good crops brought territorial farmers a degree of prosperity.

Maybe you have a favorite childhood memory of a library or a librarian, or perhaps a library or a librarian has special significance to you or your family. OLA also wants to know how your business benefits from library services, and what library services or materials you use most often. Basically, what matters most to you about libraries? A survey conducted in November 2002 by the University of Oklahoma Public Opinion Learning Laboratory in cooperation with Wilson Research Strategies, showed that Oklahomans value libraries. Those surveyed from around the state found the following to be important to their communities: 97%-Studying or homework assistance 97%-Offering literacy programs for children and adults 97%-Offering a place for childrens programs 96%-Checking out books for pleasure reading and information 95%-Offering electronic reference materials such as encyclopedias and magazines 92%-Offering a place for teen programs 90%-Using library computers 88%-Offering a place for adult programs While the survey data provide a snapshot of Oklahomans opinions on libraries, OLA wants to collect stories that personalize these experiences. Extractions: A top legislative priority for OLA this year is supporting the Oklahoma Department of Libraries budget request for additional funds to remove a long-term disparity between the state aid formula for library systems and the formula for municipal libraries. A surprise bill that would have changed the formula without the additional funding was defeated in a committee hearing. OLAs annual legislative day is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13th. New Oklahoma Reads Oklahoma Selection "Oklahoma Reads Oklahoma" is a four year program that is featuring a book on the Oklahoma experience to be read and discussed statewide each year through Oklahomas centennial year in 2007, and has been designated an official centennial program. The books are chosen by a statewide vote. The book selected for 2005 is Walking the Choctaw Road, by Choctaw storyteller Tim Tingle. For more details go to the website: http://www.okreadsok.org/. Featured speakers include author Rilla Askew, MPLA President Beth Avery, and noted readers advisor and model for the librarian action figure Nancy Pearl. There will be a special event at a Norman theater on March 30th in memory of Donna Norvell, former Childrens Library Services Coordinator at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and former MPLA Childrens and School section chair. Others Services for People Who are Deaf-Blind Independent living services (such as medical equipment, assistive technology, specialized skills training and home modifications) enhance the ability of individuals with severe disabilities to live independently and function within their families and communities. A Statewide Plan for Independent Living addresses planning, financial support and coordination between programs providing independent living services, Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS). What impact did a new Statewide Based on federal Rehabilitative Services Administration guidance, most independent living services will now be provided or coordinated through DRS contracts with the centers for independent living rather than directly by DRS staff. A portion of the funding will support activities of the Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC). DRS will continue to serve eligible individuals currently on our independent living services caseloads under the old plan until those cases are closed.
