We currently have 31 students from affected areas enrolled in our school district, and our Eastlake Elementary School has hired one teacher from the New Orleans area. Students and staff have not only assisted with the displaced families in our school district, but have also donated many items for the relief effort. Sky Ranch Elementary collected money for the Red Cross relief effort. Counselor Barbara Shelton said that the students were very interested in how they could help. The 500 students at Sky Ranch collected $400 in the first two days of their drive. One third grade student donated her tooth fairy money and another student worked extra chores at home to earn money. There were also achievement gaps between racial/ethnic minority groups and Caucasian students in the state's K-12 schools. College remediation rates have dropped in all content areas and gaps between and among demographic subgroups have narrowed. The Challenge In the early 1990s, Oklahoma high school students were graduating largely without the skills necessary to succeed in college. College remediation rates exceeded 60 percent in some areas, and the majority of high school graduates were unprepared for the rigor of entry-level college courses. In addition, wide achievement gaps existed between racial/ethnic minority groups and Caucasian students in the state's K-12 schools. The Solution The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education sought to help K-12 students better prepare for college and work, as well as to narrow the achievement gaps that existed in K-12 schools in the state.

A requirement of the Act is creation of the ACE Task Force (Section 4), which relates to other provisions of the ACE Act (Sections 5-6). They are: (Section 5) Beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, public school students shall demonstrate mastery of the state academic content standards in reading and mathematics by the end of the students eighth-grade year. Mastery shall be demonstrated by attaining a satisfactory or advanced score on the eighth-grade criterion-referenced tests in reading and mathematics. Students who do not score satisfactory shall be provided remediation.
