Extractions: LIBRARY OR MEDIA CENTER by Thomas G. Dolan Deciding on the appropriate furniture and furnishings for these areas depends mainly on how this space is going to be used. A reasonable assumption is that what was once the school library a room containing shelves upon shelves of books, tables, chairs and some filing cabinets is becoming nearly extinct, because technology has changed these libraries into media centers. Yet, in speaking to a number of experts in this area, what emerges are a number of conflicting perceptions. One is that many school libraries are still being built to the traditional model. Another is that the media center concept has become outmoded, and that type of space has been reduced to a resource room. The third is that the media center is not only alive and well but is expanding. First, lets take a look at what is happening or not happening to these spaces. Then, we can zero in on the furniture and furnishings that will best meet the changing conditions now and in the future.

This is a Research Foundation Paper published by Scholastic Library Publishing; it brings together research findings from almost ten years of school library-related research. The preface notes, "A substantial body of research since 1990 clearly demonstrates the importance of school libraries to students' education. Whether student achievement is measured by standardized reading achievement tests or by global assessments of learning, research shows that a well-stocked library staffed by a certified library media specialist has a positive impact on student achievement, regardless of the socio-economic or educational levels of the community." Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries The OELMA web site has the report of the "Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries" project carried out by Dr Ross Todd and Dr Carol Kuhlthau. The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement There is a significant body of research that demonstrates that a qualified teacher-librarian (media specialist) has a positive impact on school culture and student achievement. Indeed, several studies have been established that teachers collaborate more in schools with a teacher-librarian and students read more, enjoy reading more, write better, access and use information more effectively and excel in academic content areas. ~ Ken Haycock, 1996.
