Extractions: Interactive Map of Ohio Mineral Industries Multiple coal seams are being loaded onto 160-ton and 85-ton haul trucks at the New Lexington mine operated by Oxford Mining and located in Perry County, Ohio. The Pennsylvanian-age Lower Kittanning (No. 5) coal is 42-inches thick and the overlying Middle Kittanning (No. 6) is 52-inches thick. The interactive map for the 2003 on-line Ohio Mineral Industries Report depicts the locations of mines and quarries that are capable of producing coal, limestone, dolomite, sand and gravel, salt, sandstone, conglomerate, clay, shale, gypsum, and peat. The locations of 150 of the mining operations depicted on the 2003 map are based on Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates obtained in the field by ODNR, Division of Mineral Resources Management (DMRM) mine inspectors; the remaining mine-site locations are based on DMRM permit maps and should be considered approximate. No georeferenced, digital mine outlines are currently available. The base map includes county and township boundaries, roadways, and topographic relief (based on the U.S. Geological Survey's Digital Elevation Model dataset and the Ohio Division of Geological Surveys' Shaded Elevation Map of Ohio) The Ohio Mineral Industries Map is part of the legislatively mandated Report on Ohio Mineral Industries produced annually by the Division of Geological Survey . The 2003 Report on Ohio Mineral Industries contains detailed information (owner, production, sales, value, employment, wages, geology, and end-use) on active coal mines, coal processing facilities, and permitted industrial-mineral operations in the state. The full report with all text, figures, and maps in an Adobe Acrobat portable document is available here (hyperlink). Summary information on 2003 Ohio mining activity (contact, production, etc.) for an individual operation can be accessed by activating the i (Information) tool icon found on the interactive map tool bar, then selecting a mine or quarry location in the geographical area of interest. Meta-analysis provides more objectivity and precision than looking at one or a few polls, and in the case of election prediction gives a more accurate current snapshot. In this case the median decided-voter calculation captured the exact final outcome. Calculations were based on all available state polls in the week before the election, which were used to estimate the probability of a Bush/Kerry win, state by state. These were then used to go through all possible combinations of battleground state results. For a popular article about this calculation, read this article and the follow-up . Wind Powering America: Ohio Wind Map This map of ohio shows the wind resource at 50 meters. Energy Effiency s ohio Wind Resource Explorer Web site provides an interactive map and 30m, 70m, http://www.eere.energy.gov/windandhydro/windpoweringamerica/where_is_wind_ohio.a
Extractions: Printable:( PDF 3.8 MB Download Acrobat Reader The Department of Energy's Wind Program and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recently published a new wind resource map for the state of Ohio. This resource map shows wind speed estimates at 50 meters above the ground. Future plans are to provide wind speed estimates at 30 meters, which are useful for identifying small wind turbine opportunities. As a renewable resource, wind is classified according to wind power classes, which are based on typical wind speeds. These classes range from class 1 (the lowest) to class 7 (the highest). This map shows the highest wind resources in Ohio are found across the northwestern one-third of the state. Class 3 areas concentrated near Lake Erie with the largest contiguous area extending from Sandusky towards Toledo. Other Class 3 areas are located northwest of Columbus on relatively high elevations. Particular locations in the Class 3 areas could have higher wind power class values at 80-m than shown on the 50-m map because of possible high wind shear. Given the advances in technology, a number of locations in the Class 3 areas may be suitable for utility-scale wind development. The Ohio Department of Development, Office of Energy Effiency's
