     Extractions: TO BE FEATURED IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PUBLICATION COLUMBUS (March 19, 2005) - Governor Bob Taft today helped unveil a new tourism marketing campaign coordinated by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and National Geographic to promote unique tourism experiences and sites of national significance in Ohio's Appalachian region. National Geographic will highlight 22 sites in Ohio's Appalachian region, along with 334 other sites in 12 other Appalachian states, in its April 2005 issue of Traveler magazine. Shipments of nearly one million map guide inserts in the April Traveler magazine began March 18 to subscribers and newsstands. In the coming months, another 300,000 copies of the map will be distributed by state tourism offices of the ARC's 13 states to targeted travel mailing lists, regional welcome centers and tourism trade shows. ARC will also distribute the map to schools, libraries and civic organizations throughout Appalachia. "This collaboration between the Appalachian Regional Commission and National Geographic will draw national and international audiences to many of the unique and significant tourism experiences that Ohio's Appalachian region has to offer," said Taft, who serves as the States' Co-Chair of the ARC. "Drawing attention to many of the rich, diverse and, in many cases, undiscovered treasures in Appalachia Ohio will also have a positive economic impact on the region."

     Extractions: NEO-EDEN is a project to create and maintain a data exchange network for northeast Ohio, focusing on environmental and geospatial information. The project will collect, process, and make available on the Internet a broad range of environmental and land-use data in the fourteen-county northeast Ohio region, assemble environmentally-related geospatial data that spans the region, and assist in providing local training on content and applications of these data, Internet access to them, and the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) endorsed Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata. Four universities in northeast Ohio - Cleveland State University (CSU), Kent State University (KSU), the University of Akron (UA), and Youngstown State University (KSU) have received a grant from the Urban University Program (UUP). Effective management of environmental resources requires current and accurate information which can be used to recognize changes in ecosystems and to link these trends with their likely causes. High quality information is necessary to identify and respond to these trends. Today, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are being used to ensure that rational and ecologically sound decisions are made concerning resource development, impact mitigation, environmental monitoring and other environmental management issues. GIS can evaluate land and resource use alternatives while considering potential environmental and cultural resource impacts, economic implications, and potential use conflicts.

The Center's newly renovated, permanent natural history exhibit features Ohio's plants, animals, geology, geography, and climate and weather.
