Extractions: visited a number of fields in east central Indiana Friday afternoon that had not yet emerged even though the calendar was approaching three weeks since they had been planted. More importantly, apparent seedling disease development in these fields was widespread and eventual stand establishment may be poor enough to merit replanting. The common combination of factors among these fields was mid-April planting (5 to 6 days prior to the recent cold snap) followed by the onset of cold soils (too cool to sustain germination), heavy rainfall, short-term ponding, saturated surface soils, surface soil crusts, and (eventually) seedling diseases.

Extractions: When we first started this project we identified 27 volunteer water quality monitoring programs sponsored or co-sponsored by Cooperative Extension in the United States and its territories. Now we are up to 38! We are always looking for programs we have missed and have had help from people across the country to find 'new' programs. Our latest change to this page was to identify which programs are sponsored or co-sponsored by Cooperative Extension and which are affiliated in other ways such as by providing technical assistance with trainings, educational materials, equipment, or meeting space for volunteer monitoring events. The map above shows where and to what extent Cooperative Extension is involved in volunteer water quality monitoring across the nation. Not shown is an Extension co-sponsored program in American Samoa. The first of these programs began in 1978, the most recent this year. In parentheses next to each program's name is the year that the program began. Program volunteers are monitoring a wide range of aquatic habitats including rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wetlands, estuaries, and drinking water wells.

Extractions: Dick Biggins and Hilary Vinson, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Asheville Field Office, Asheville, North Carolina. Sponsored by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Asheville Field Office, Asheville, North Carolina Publication Number 420-014, posted November 1997 Abstract What Good Are They? Introduction Pearl Buttons ... Key to 10 Selected Bivalve Mollusks of the Ohio River Basin Nearly 300 species of mussels inhabit freshwater rivers, streams, and lakes in the United States. This is the richest diversity of mussels found in the world and an extraordinary natural heritage that needs protection. Because of the lustrous, pearl-like interior of the shells, some of these pearly mussels have important commercial value in the cultured pearl and jewelry industry. Our pearly mussels are of unique ecological value as natural biological filters, food for fish and wildlife, and indicators of good water quality. The abundance and variety of mussels have declined sharply in this century. At the turn of the century, the shallow, swift-flowing shoal areas of many of the streams and rivers within the Ohio River basin were filled with millions of living mussels. Today, many of these areas harbor only remnant populations of mussels. Dam construction, siltation, water pollution, mining and industrial wastes, and the introduction of exotic shellfish seriously threaten their continued existence. At present, 30 mussel species are presumed extinct, 57 species are federally endangered or threatened, and nearly 70 species are species of concern nationwide. No other widespread animal group in North America has been jeopardized to this extent.
