Waves Characteristics (Ocean / Lakes) Waves are generated on the surface of water (ocean/lakes) by wind. The wind transfers energy to the water, through friction between the air molecules and the water molecules. Waves of water do not move horizontally, they only move up and down (a wave does not represent a flow of water). Use this wave interactive to learn more on waves. GDD Shelf-Ocean Dynamics Team A study into the eutrophication of estuarine and coastal waters by a team at the Southampton oceanography Centre. (Site under development) http://www.soc.soton.ac.uk/GDD/Sonus/
Extractions: Research Summary The Shelf-Ocean Dynamics Team (SODT) are part of the George Deacon Division (GDD) in the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton . The focus of our work is improving the precision of our understanding of the role of shelf seas and ocean margins in the global carbon cycle. Understanding and predicting the dynamics of this system is complex because of the ways in which living organisms - plankton, a major contributor to the oceans ability to take up about one third of the carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere each year - interact with their physical and chemical environment. The main strands of SODT's research are: Developing and validating improved methods of data collection to remove aliasing inherent in research ship cruises, which can sample for only limited parts of the year. This work contributes to the EU Framework supported project FerryBox Operating continuously monitoring automated data collection systems on ships running regular routes. This work is part of the GDD's contribution to the FerryBox project (SOC-OPS) undertaken in collaboration with other groups including the University of East Anglia ( CarboOcean ) and the UK Met Office ( ISAR Using the data to accurately define the impact of human inputs of nutrients and carbon dioxide on the shelf sea and ocean margin eco-system ( IMBER Using the data to develop and validate numerical models.
Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory - Oceanography, Marine Science, Research, Moni POL's scientific research focuses on oceanography encompassing global sealevels and geodesy, numerical modelling of continental shelf seas and coastal sediment processes.
