Extractions: Unit Rationale: This unit has been created around the parameters of Physical Oceanography however it should not be considered 'content driven.' The content merely provides the theme for students to use the process skills of science. These process skills-Observing Classifying Measuring Evaluating Applying- should be the root of elementary and intermediate science instruction. Once a student becomes comfortable with these skills, then the doors to scientific discovery (no matter the discipline) become opened wider. (Use visual "Umbrellas" here if possible) Student Purpose/Motivation/Focus: Ocean Biology: Reexamining how marine plants and animals cope with their ocean environment. Students will begin unit by choosing a 'favorite' marine animal. They will pre -assess how they think this animal is specifically adapted to marine environment. This will provide the anticipatory set and create future possible dissonance in their understanding as unit is presented.

Now after dividing into four different groups, (one for each diagram), you will construct scale 3-D models of your groups assigned diagram, and will be evaluated according to a teacher- made grading scale. When you are done, your model will be presented to the class. Materials Any arts and crafts materials that you or the teacher provides Procedure Organize into groups and find out which diagram you are to do.

Extractions: 1 - 3 class periods The Earth is a special planet, just the right distance from the Sun and the right size to support a diversity of living organisms. In this lesson, students will explore life's requirements and how the Earth meets these requirements. Students will also research the characteristics of another planet in our solar system, decide whether they think this planet could support life, and create a project on a fictional colonization of this planet or a visit of humans to this planet. 1b. Earth's Location and its Effects Origins of the Solar System 1 class period For centuries, people have sought to understand where the Earth, the Sun, and the planets came from. As human technology and knowledge of the universe have improved, the theories of the origin of the solar system have changed. Currently, scientists generally believe that the solar system was formed from a ball of interstellar gas and dust 4.5 billion years ago. In this lesson, students will identify some of the components of the solar system and explore how the solar system was formed. 1e. Fly Me to the Moon

Extractions: Surfers live for the big waves, and on January 28, 1998 in Waimea Beach, Hawaii many of the best surfers in the world gathered for the chance to surf the largest waves in recorded history. But most of them just watched in awe. What caused the massive waves? How did they know the waves were coming? Why does the north shore of Oahu offer the best surfing waves in the world? Would YOU surf an 80-foot wave!! Using the Nature episode " Condition Black ," students will view the breathtaking force of the sea. They will understand how surfers study waves in an attempt to tame them. Students will also gain a greater understanding of the different types of waves, how they are created, and whether they can experience them in their local environment. Through an interactive Web site, they will learn about the parts of a wave and how energy is transferred from the wind to the water. Ultimately, the students will generate their own waves during a hands-on experiment, and create a fun video demonstrating how surfers use science to predict when the surf's up. Cowabunga!
Extractions: very favorable review Written by Carol L. Matthews, M. Ed. Reviewed by Joel Teret, Pres., New York State Marine Education Assn., Reprint from Ripples Newsletter Winter '91: "Carol Matthews has written an excellent laboratory manual for secondary school and early college level marine science classes that will complement all marine biology texts written for these levels. The exercises within this manual augment the disciplines of Marine Biology and Oceanography . Each investigation is written in a concise, clearly elucidated procedural format. Student observations are depicted through several means of expression: tables are available for students to record data; grids are provided for graph construction; and space is afforded for illustrations. Each experience also requires students to answer questions and/or complete statements in a Conclusion and a Discussion section. Clearly drawn and precise illustrations by Douglas L. Matthews serve as illuminating aids to student perceptions."
