Specifically, oceanographers collect and study data about marine life (sea plants and animals and their habits), ore and petroleum deposits (oils and minerals found in oozings on the ocean floor), the actual contour of the ocean floor (ocean mountains, valleys, and depths, as well as the fundamental motions of ocean water (waves, tides and currents).
