Extractions: The joint NASA-German Aerospace Center Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (Grace) mission has released its first science product, the most accurate map yet of Earth's gravity field. Grace is the newest tool for scientists working to unlock secrets of ocean circulation and its effects on climate. Created from 111 days of selected Grace data, to help calibrate and validate the mission's instruments, this preliminary model improves knowledge of the gravity field so much it is being released to oceanographers now, months in advance of the scheduled start of routine Grace science operations. The data are expected to significantly improve our ability to understand ocean circulation, which strongly influences weather and climate. Dr. Byron Tapley, Grace principal investigator at UT's Center for Space Research, called the new model a feast for oceanographers. "This initial model represents a major advancement in our knowledge of Earth's gravity field. "Pre- Grace models contained such large errors many important features were obscured. Grace brings the true state of the oceans into much sharper focus, so we can better see ocean phenomena that have a strong impact on atmospheric weather patterns, fisheries and global climate change."

Extractions: In the current issue of Geology, University of Rhode Island geological oceanographers Meng-Yang Lee and Steven Carey; Chang-Hwa Chen and Yoshiyuki Iizuka of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan; and Kuo-Yen Wei of National Taiwan University describe their investigation into the possibility that eruptions from the Toba caldera on the island of Sumatra caused a severe "volcanic winter" and the initiation of a glacial period. The magnitude of the oldest Toba eruptions had not previously been documented due to the difficulty in recognizing their widespread erupted products in marine sediments. Lee and the team of scientists present new data on the distribution of volcanic ash from the oldest Toba eruption in Ocean Drilling Program cores and piston cores in the South China Sea and Indian Ocean. By using high-resolution litho-, magneto-, and oxygen isotope stratigraphic records, the geologists were able to clarify the correlation between distribution patterns in the cores, refine the age of the layers, and reestimate the eruptive volume of the early eruption of Toba.

However, the most important thing to know is the water's density in comparison to the water around it. Although many people think of the ocean as homogenous , in fact different parts of the ocean can have very different salinities and temperatures. Salinity and temperature determine the density of the water, and the physical oceanographers on this cruise were constantly taking these measurements from the water column to help predict the water's flow. The more salt in water the denser it is. Thus saltier water will sink, affecting current flow. Extractions: 12 August 2003 Oceanographers converge on Monterey Bay MOSS LANDINGOceanographers from more than a dozen prestigious research institutions have converged on Monterey Bay this month to examine the bay as never before, collaborating in a unique research experiment. They have come together as part of the Autonomous Ocean Sampling Network (AOSN) program, funded by the Office of Naval Research. This multidisciplinary project is being coordinated and hosted by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in Moss Landing. The AOSN 2003 Monterey Field Experiment brings together physical oceanographers, marine biologists, computer modeling experts, and engineers who design robots for undersea research. This diverse group is studying the bay using cutting-edge computer models and high-tech observational tools such as satellites, airplanes, ships, drifters, buoys, autonomous underwater vehicles, and an entire fleet of undersea gliders. The researchers are using these tools to observe and predict the upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water that occurs off Monterey Bay during the summer months. These upwelling events create blooms of marine plankton that support the abundant fisheries and other wildlife in and around the bay. The Autonomous Ocean Sampling Network (AOSN) Monterey 2003 Field Experiment involves several ships and dozens of floating, diving, and flying oceanographic instruments operating simultaneously. Their goal is to observe and model water movement, temperature, and other upwelling-related processes in Monterey Bay over a 4-week period during August, 2003. But this time, the oceanographers are not on a ship. Most of them are in a room at the University of Washington in Seattle. And according to an article from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer , they're using high-speed Internet connections to control robotic vehicles exploring the deep Atlantic Ocean thousands of miles away. Thanks to satellites, the remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) Argus and Hercules can transmit videos back to Seattle in real time. After analysis, the scientists can move the ROVs to specific areas of interest without having their feet wet." The El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a climatic phenomenon which influences the entire global climate system. The term refers to two closely linked states, the classic ENSO, commonly know as El Nino, associated with warm events, and the opposite extreme, anti-ENSO, commonly called La Nina, associated with cold events. ENSO events usually occur every two to ten years and generally last up to 18 months. They are characterised by a weakening or reversal of the easterly trade winds, a warming of the waters of the eastern Pacific and the switching of the see-sawing atmospheric pressure between the eastern and western Pacific (called the Southern Oscillation). Anti-ENSO events are generally associated with anomalies that are the opposite to those linked to ENSO; a strengthening of the trade winds and a cooling of waters in the eastern Pacific. ENSO events result in climatic changes throughout the world, in particular drought in southern Africa, Brazil and Australasia, and floods in the countries bordering the eastern Pacific. Anti- ENSO events generally involve phenomena which mirror those of ENSO; floods in Australasia for example. Currently, our understanding of ENSO is limited. Leading Australian climatologist Professor Ann Henderson-Sellers, suggests that ocean warming may unbalance the constant swing from ENSO to anti-ENSO. She speculates that ENSO may become the normal climate state and anti-ENSO the unusual event. (A.Henderson- Sellers and R. Blong, "The Greenhouse Effect. Smith, Dan Distel, Amy Baco and other individuals have found that whale bones, along with sunken wood, could be a missing link in the introduction of new species near deep-sea vents, which can reach high temperatures and spew a chemical soup that many organisms find intolerable. The researchers' results will be published in the Feb. 17 issue of the journal Nature Smith and his colleagues are intrigued by the creatures that are attracted to whale corpses. One organism, a big, orange polychaete worm that looks like a furry centipede, can be found in such numbers around whale skeletons that one researcher says it looks like the bones are covered with a orange shag carpet. But scientists have yet to learn how these worms arrive at the carcasses, where they come from, and what their role is in consuming the massive amounts of organic material - often more than 30 tons - found in a whale fall. A complex web of currents steered by winds and the rotation of the earth carry warm water from the equator towards the poles and cold water back towards the equator. By redistributing heat around the world, these currents profoundly affect our climate. For example, warm-water currents such as the Gulf Stream are responsible for the relatively mild temperatures in northern Europe. The interaction between currents and climate is receiving a lot of attention, especially given the prospect of global warming due the buildup of greenhouse gases. Scientists are focusing on how a possible warming of the air and water might affect ocean circulation and how shifts in the currents will in turn impact the global climate. Some researchers have even speculated that global warming could trigger the shutdown of the currents carrying warm water north, plunging northern Europe into a deep freeze. To make confident predictions, however, scientists still need to work on the basics. While satellites have tracked the warm-water currents at the surface of the oceans, scientists are only gradually piecing together the complicated networks of cold deepwater currents.
