The songs were recorded by a BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) Agent in 1910, in the White Mountains area, just off the Clear Fork River. The name of the Apache Medicine Man whose songs these belong to is long dead. As is Lipan custom, his name is not allowed to be spoken in public. Permission to use these three Apache songs was given to me by a modern-day Lipan Medicine Man."

The time between birth and six months is primarily about conditioning your child to your voice, and to the sight of books. Developing an understanding of these books comes later on. Books for babies should provide stimulation to the babys sight and hearing. Remember- little eyes cannot focus on the complicated illustrations that adults easily recognize. In other words, that trip to the art gallery will have to wait a few years.

Extractions: « Unpurple prose Main Taste test » Why are children's books so grim? In The Spectator (use this for registration), Rachel Johnson complains that children's literature these days is all too devoted to sex and social issues. Instead of reading Anne of Green Gables and The Secret Garden her daughter reads about a child who smears the walls with excrement, children who cope with a manic-depressive mother, a girl dumped in a dustbin at birth, etc. Take Doing It by Melvin Burgess, about three boys learning about sex, and I quote from the blurb: "Dino really fancies fit, sexy Jackie but she just won't give him what he wants. Jonathan likes Deborah, but she's a bit fat what will his mates say? Ben's been secretly shagging his teacher for ages. He used to love it, but what if he wants to stop?" . . . why are some children's books (pace Potter) so grim? (And I do mean grim rather than dark.) Philip Pullman and Lemony Snicket are dark in the way that C.S. Lewis or Roald Dahl are dark, in an inventive, fantastical, even anarchical way that takes root and sprouts in the child's imagination. Whereas Doing It and the forthcoming Julie Burchill book

Kids' Lit Quiz SA: A Report SA Kids lit Quiz Experience of New Zealand Finals 2005-06-22 In one theme, questions could include classics, nursery rhymes, comics and contemporary http://www.kidslitquiz.com/SA/report.html
Extractions: It would have been hard for the subtle knife to cut through the atmosphere of tension hovering over the stage of the Aotea centre in Auckland, New Zealand. Tables of four children huddled together, to pitch their wits against each other. All these children would have imbibed literature for months of the previous year: because they love reading and because they were broadening their normal reading base, in an attempt to cover whatever topics the Wizard of Words, Wayne Mills (in SA we would call him the Sangoma of Stories) could conjure up. The team had little idea what to expect from the New Zealand finals. When Wayne identified the five themes (with twelve questions per theme) for the finals, they realised the focus was narrower: a whole section on Hans Christian Anderson, another on Fables, one on Nursery Rhymes, another on "Guess the Author" and finally one on "Identify the book from opening lines". The quizmaster went to great pains to ask questions that were not regionally biased towards teams from one of the three countries represented, so many questions covered books from the USA. The buzzer system ensured that the first team to buzz answered the question. For the SA team, this was a great learning curve â a quick draw of literary memory, with pulses racing as they reached for the buzzer, often too late. One had to be sure of the answer, as a wrong answer led to points being subtracted. Overall the team came sixth, with an awesome win by a local New Zealand school for girls, St. Margaret's. All the teams were presented with book prizes and Paper Plus, the sponsors, had ensured these were recently issued titles, to take keen readers even further in their never ending search for new, exciting worlds of literature.

Extractions: There's something quite fascinating about nursery rhymes. On the surface, they're simple little songs with simple little words sung by children still basking in the light of their simple little lives. Yet scratch the surface of any nursery rhyme and you'll reveal a much more complex 'adult' history. These rhymes were often born out of a desire to instruct or teach, or to pass on a moral lesson. They were also a way in which major historical events could be remembered and passed on, like the Great Fire of London in 'London's Burning' or the devastation of the Plague immortalised in the rather creepy 'Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses'. Indeed, just what is it that makes some nursery rhymes seem rather sinister? Why did the makers of the seminal and utterly spooky British TV series
