The juxtaposition of native and anglo-european names also serve as a reminder of the diversity of the hardy resourceful peoples who call the Canadian North their home. On April 1, 1999 school children in Canada (but alas probably not in the United States) will have a new territory and a new capital to memorize. Nunavut (Inuktitut for "Our Land") is being be created out of the eastern part of the Northwest Territories. This date, we are told, was not chosen for any significant or sinister reason other than it was the start of a new fiscal year. April foolishness notwithstanding, at Midnight on April 1st , the eastern section of the Northwest Territories comprising 1,900,000 km2 extending north from Manitoba-Hudson's Bay-Quebec past the magnetic north pole to the very tip of the Canadian Arctic on Ellesmere Island will become a separate self governing territory in the Canadian Confederation.

Also in the general area of education there are parallels and perhaps lessons to be learned. The project plan will stretch over 3 years. The overall aim of the project is to promote a circum-polar identity for young people in Iqaluit and Karasjok by studying traditional rights and culture, focussing on previous, present and future lifestyles. Extractions: The Government of Canada is contributing close to $12 million in support of the QINIQ network. Through the National Satellite Initiative (NSI), the Government of Canada is contributing $ 7.83 million over 8 years, from the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund, to help defray the costs of satellite delivered connections. The goal of the NSI is to make available affordable satellite capacity for broadband services in communities in the far to mid-North, and in isolated and remote areas of Canada, where satellite technology is the only practical solution. This is the first NSI project to receive funding under the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund. The Government of Canada has also contributed $3,884,850 for the QINIQ network through the Broadband for Rural and Northern Development Pilot Program (BRAND). This has meant helping 25 communities across Nunavut to develop business plans and build satellite receiving stations. This program was created to help provide high speed Internet access to northern, rural and First Nations communities. It has been successful in engaging partners across the country through a community driven approach and will be providing service to more than 880 communities.

But the pillars of the earth collapsed, and all were destroyed. And the world was emptiness. Then two men grew up from a hummock of earth. They were born and fully grown all at once. And they wished to have children. A magic song changed one of them into a woman, and they had children. These were our earliest forefathers, and from them all the lands were peopled. If you are a birdwatcher there is a large variety of birds that fly north to nest and raise their young because of the midnight sun in summertime.
