Extractions: From Brain Scan to Lesson Plan Neuroscientists are uncovering how the human brain learns, and will soon be able to translate that knowledge to the classroom. But more researchand collaboration between psychology and other fieldsis needed. BY BRIDGET MURRAY Monitor staff Down in the basement of Haskins Laboratories, psychological researchers are starting to unravel a mystery that has long puzzled educators: What happens in the human brain as it wrestles with words? Crowded around computer screens, scrolling through images that show the brain as it reads, the researchers are gaining insight into how we perform this crucial, yet complex, task. It's a scene being repeated in labs everywhere, part of an explosion of imaging research on learning over the past decade. While researchers at sites such as New Haven-based Haskins investigate reading, psychologists in Paris watch what happens in people's brains as they tackle math problems, and neuroscientists at Stanford University in California puzzle over unusual brain patterns in people with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Imaging research is pinpointing what the brain does as people read, calculate and estimate. It's also showing what goes wrong when people have difficulty with those tasks.

Extractions: Problems that involve calculations using very large or very small numbers can escalate into "crises" when the appropriate tools and techniques for solving them are not available. Scientific notation provides an effective means for handling numbers that might otherwise be considered "unwieldy" in problem solving. This lesson will utilize VOD technology to access instructional media that addresses scientific notation in less than 3 minutes! Subject Matter
MarcoPolo - New Lessons Poetry Sound and sense ReadWriteThink. This ReadWriteThink lesson suggests The instructional plan involves reading and listening to selected poems, http://www.marcopolo-education.org/teacher/new_lessons.aspx
Extractions: ReadWriteThink In this ReadWriteThink lesson, students keep a daily diary that records how and when they listen to radio, music, and other streaming media or archived broadcasts. Students then analyze the details and compare their results to published reports on American radio listeners. They conclude by reflecting on their findings and writing a final statement on their audio literacy practices and interests. ReadWriteThink In this ReadWriteThink lesson, students write to their school librarian, requesting that a specific text be added to the school library collection. They use persuasive writing skills as well as online tools to write a letter stating their case. Students then have an opportunity to share their letter with the librarian. Xpeditions In this Xpeditions lesson, one of a multi-part unit on the Genographic Project, students consider ways in which the project is impacted by scientific and technological advances, including those in life sciences, communications, and transportation. They learn why indigenous communities play such a crucial role in unlocking the secrets of our common ancestry, examine how those communities are being threatened, make projections about future challenges to their ways of life, and consider how research such as the Genographic Project can play a role in preserving them. The Genographic Project, a partnership of the National Geographic Society and IBM, is a five-year study to understand the human journeywhere we came from and how humankind came to populate the planet.
